The Issue with Mongols (History Fiction or Science? Book 9), by Anatoly Fomenko, Gleb Nosovskiy

'The Issue with Mongols' is that this small nomade tribe did not know till XX century how great a power they were once. Nor did Mongols know who Great Ghengis Khan was and how he has conquered Eurasia, Russia, China, the whole works. The Mongolian Horde was merely the Russian army. According to the official version of history, Russia remained under the political and military yoke of the Mongols for many centuries on end. The term “Mongol” is usually assumed to have always meant the same thing – however, this turns out to be incorrect; the modern interpretation is of a relatively recent origin. Bear in mind that Mongolia didn’t exist as an independent state until the early XX century! The word “Mongol” simply meant “Great One” – its association with the nomadic tribes hailing from the steppes north of China is a later invention. But why did it have to be invented?
The reason is simple: the actual “Mongol conquerors of Russia” never existed. The yoke theory was created by the court German historians of the new Russian dynasty, the Romanovs. It has served the end of justifying the Romanovs’ claims for the throne and demonising their longtime adversaries – the Horde, or the professional Russian army, which remained fiercely loyal to the old Russian dynasty, deposed and finally destroyed by the Romanovs as a result of a conspiracy. The savage invaders and torturers of the Russian land that we read about in history textbooks were the protectors of the state in reality – and ethnic Slavs for the most part. Small wonder historians still cannot find a single trace of the mythical Mongol capital – no such capital ever existed anywhere near the Gobi Desert.
The Mongol Horde identified as the Russian army are extremely hard to swallow for any Russian, yet they are just the tip of the iceberg called New Chronology, which is a radical reconstruction of world history in general and a brainchild of Anatoly Fomenko, one of today’s leading mathematicians and by all means a scientist to be taken seriously. His sensational fundamental work entitled History: Fiction or Science? is finally available in English – the ice-cold facts and the rock-hard scientific evidence concealed underneath that glossy cover portraying Jesus pinioned to the Big Ben can, and eventually will, sink the entire paper fleet of consensual history.

Dr Fomenko et al as scientists are ready to recognize the alleged mistakes of New Chronology, to repent and to retract if and only if:
- radiocarbon dating methods or dendrochronology pass the black box' tests;
- astronomy refutes their results on eclipses;
- Robert Newton (US astrophisist) was wrong accusing Ptolemy of swindle.
At present historians are not willing to comply. The radiocarbon dating labs run their very costly tests only if is the sample to be dated is accompanied with an idea of age pronounced by historians on basis of...subjective..mmm...gutfeeling and the history books they have been writing for the last 400 years. Radiocarbon labs politely bill for their fiddling and finetuning with C14 to get the dates 'to order' of historians. Circulus viciousus is perfect.

When Russians Ruled the World
By Arch Stanton
For those who don't know what these books are (ie. most people who aren't Russian) you're looking at the dry scholarly tomes of a mathematician who decided he didn't care for the minor role of Russia in ancient and early medieval history and decided that this meant all history must be all wrong. Now I'm not dissing the Russians here. These ideas were rightly dismissed by Russian experts decades ago and, except for the occasional eccentric mathematician and celebrity, they receive little attention now. That's why he's searching for a new audience: his books have sold just about as much as they ever will in Russia. Time to release them in English. Because if there's one thing an English audience loves reading it's Russian propaganda.

These books are a statistician's attempt to combat established history using page after endless page of charts and diagrams in the hope that people won't actually check through all these figures. At twenty-two volumes in length it's a fairly safe bet, even though these books are extremely short. But what's really amazing is how little digging it actually takes to find the repeated and obvious errors in his work. The man is so certain that he must be right that he sees no problem with forcibly altering the facts to fit his "theory" or accepting huge margins of error when seeking a parallelism.

You don't even have to wait for the book to begin for the errors to creep in. The title alone presents a false dichotomy. Fiction or Science? As if those are the only two options. And I have no doubt that Fomenko does indeed see it that way given his haughty dismissal of anything even loosely connected to the Arts. History is too close to the Arts and must be purged of anything that isn't a string of exact, quantifiable numbers. All similar number strings must be combined into the same string, and any "facts" or "historical personages" attached to those numbers must be purged as well. Nice, clean math. But it's more disturbing than just that. These books are a vast horde of Russian nationalic propaganda. Apart from ridiculing any non-Scientists (AKA those unqualified to form proper conclusions) the main goal of these books is to establish that Russia ruled all the world from North America through Europe into China and the Middle East, and they did so for most of recorded history. So his two assumptions about the world are:
1. All Non-Scientists are either liars or idiots.
2. Everything in the world originated in Russia.

One of these two assumptions is underlying every single one of his conclusions. He treats his random and unsupported speculations with just as much respect as ones that have been established through years of research backed by hard evidence. All Arts and Humanities subjects are regarded as worthless as sources of information and aren't even worth mentioning unless to state (not argue or prove) that they are wrong.

And now the history of the world as outlined in this book: History begins when Andronicos Comnenos dies and becomes Jesus. History records him as an unsuccessful Greek emperor with no real successes who was beaten to death by the mob and not a poor prophet from Nazareth who was crucified but hey, what do they know. It's not like the crucifixion was an important part of the story or anything. Immediately all of Europe decides that they're Christian and march against the Muslims. It may sound confusing why they'd blame the Muslims for what was an internal coup but they were probably just confused because Mohammed wasn't born yet. At some point they changed their minds and decided to skip the first three crusades and jump straight onto the Fourth (except that they didn't. It was actually the same as the First. Obviously. Please try and keep up). They then sacked Constantinople which was also Rome which was Troy which was Jerusalem. At some point they get confused and occupied the Holy Land as well and then forget all about Constantinople and let it fall back to the Greeks since Jerusalem was now Constantinople which was Troy which was Rome. People back then had very short memories often forgetting why they did something before they even did it. This is probably due to their lack of statisticians. During the First Crusade the Greeks decide to avenge the kidnapping of their queen by... also sacking Constantinople. After sacking their own city they quietly vanish for a few years, probably in embarrassment. Some time later Erasmus wrote the New Testament confusing generations of scholars who wondered what they had been copying out for all that time. Having now written a New Testament it was decided that they needed an Old one. I'm sure the reasons for the reversed order are as obvious to everyone else as they are to Fomenko. Some time in the 15th Century David rose up, except that he was Turkish and ruled in Constantinople. Despite the many wars with the Turks Europe had never warred with the Turks and accepted all of these events as holy writ. After all, the Turks were really Russian in funny hats and the Russians ruled the world. The Byzantines were secretly ruling in England. After the death of Solomon (Suleimon) the Jews split off from Christianity because they were tired of not being persecuted because of something they didn't do and decided that being hunted by the Inquisition was more fun. In the confusion the Catholics and Orthodox Christians split apart as well because everyone else was doing it and it seemed a good idea at the time. They were to regret this later when the Catholics sacked their city but that had already happened so it was fine.

It turns out that Russia has dominated the world since the earliest recorded history (what a shock!). The Mongols were not from Mongolia because the people there are nothing but worthless servants of the Russian Empire (it's ok. Fomenko assures us that the Mongols never knew of Genghis Khan until some pesky monks told them that they used to rule the world). Russia was actually the major Empire that the Romans were based off of and has existed since the dawn of civilization. Silly Georgians thinking they are anything but the personal property of Russia! Ha ha. They also controlled America, Europe and North Africa by 1300 so I guess that we should all submit to the Russian yoke as is our hereditary duty. Occasionally a czar would allow the governors of Europe (kings hah!) to wage war on each other if they pleased him. Presumably the English sucked up to him better than France which is why they did so well in the Hundred Years War but then lost his favor again which resulted in the French winning. Joan of Arc was probably the czar's sister or something. The czar could summon anyone to his court and they had to obey which is why Moscow is renowned the world over as being filled with better artwork and architecture than such dives as Paris and Rome (which isn't the REAL Rome after all). After Russia fell in the 1600s (through internal troubles. No one could EVER conquer Russians) the rest of the world immediately conspired to hide that they ever existed lest they should try to rule over them again. Thus they erased this empire from the history books and replaced it with such lies as Rome and the Holy Roman Empire (couldn't they even pick a new name? Obvious!). Thus the treacherous Romanovs rose to power (did I mention that he first published this under the Soviets?) and they too decided to forget there had ever been a Russian Empire of such a scale. Many "Roman" documents are simply Russian ones with a few name changes. Latin is merely a corrupted form of church Slavonic, despite bearing no similarity to that language. The Russians probably invented it to confuse future generations of schoolkids. They had after all had it engraved all over the southern part of their empire on specific styles of buildings which they immediately buried and built medieval cities on top of to confuse archaeologists. It never showed up in Russia itself. Perhaps they punished the provinces by making them write everything in Latin. Oh those cruel Russians. After the late 18th Century things begin to return to what is normally called history.

As you can see it is far less confusing than the 'conventional' timeline. You might think I'm making this up but that is what you get when you put all his history together. Minus the sarcasm perhaps.

By the third book focusing exclusively on Russian history you may be starting to catch on to the idea that maybe making Russia look great is the purpose of this entire series. Congratulations: you can recognize patterns. Fomenko seems to think he's the only one capable of this. So this book continues to tell his story of Russian history. The Byzantines (Russians) collapsed unexpectedly from the fallout of that whole Jesus thing and each state immediately established its own version of history, which they nonetheless managed to keep separate and internally consistent. In Mongolia (Russia) the Horde (Russians) were disorganized and took years to recover from this. Although, as the center of all human civilization, they still managed to receive Byzantine empresses in marriage. Oh, and all European nobility is descended from Augustus. A random claim about a man whose entire line died out within a few generations but whatever.

I'm not even going to bother going into too much depth here. Unless you know a lot of Russian history you won't know who I'm talking about anyway. Suffice it to say that every early Russian ruler was in fact one of the great Mongolian khans, starting with Georgi (Genghis). Tedious stuff for me, but maybe a Russian historian would find it more entertaining. This is actually as far as I'm going with the Russian ones. No fewer than seven of these books (almost a third) are detailing Russian history, and while that's fine and dandy for a Russian nationalist pseudohistorian it's pretty boring for someone outside Russia.

Mongols from Berlin

Occam's razor: among competing hypotheses, the one with the fewest assumptions should be selected. Occam's razor does not seek to offer complete and absolute proof, but to find the simplest probable answer to a question of why an event happened. Dr Fomenko et al applied this razor rule to Mongolia to find out that Mongols didn't know in mid-XIXcy just how great they were once or who Mr Ghengis was. Moreover, Mongolia was a label for the 'ancient' Great Horde Empire that spread through XII-XVIcy colonizing most of Eurasia from Pacific to Atlantic. Horde fell into pieces due to Great Strife of mid-XVIcy. The 'mongol' invasions of Horde took place to punish rebellious fiefdoms that tried to break away, or worse stopped to pay taxes. They found that the 'mongol' myth was injected into russian history by german historians Schleizer, Meier et al imported to Russia by czar Peter I.

Pseudohistory as exact science
By B.Guggenheim
When the clergy took over the control of Chronology in XVIcy it was a part of mathematics. Saint Augustine warned: 'be wary of mathematicians, particularly when they speak the truth !' Prescient. Today the mathematicians took it back and checked it. The scientific approach to the World History with ways and means of exact sciences shows: all real events that took place over 1200 years ago as well as people who allegedly acted in them are simply unknown to us and will stay so forever. Ancient Egypt, Europe, Rome, China, India, etc..etc histories are figmental prior to that date. Home sapiens could neither read nor write at that time. That was prehistory. Everything told to us about pre-1200 years ago events is fiction. Human 'civilization' had yet to be worked out. Civilization started its relentless progress in 800 A.D., developed its major features like writing, communications, religions and & arts, centralized civil and military management approx. by 1000 A.D. That was 'ancient' history. Nearly nothing is about this period known for sure. 'Antiquity ' is label applied to figmental events and people that allegedly lived prior to 800 A.D, but actually happened in 1000 A.D.– 1500 A.D. All written, artistic, even architectural artifacts presented as being older than 1200 years are found upon scrutiny either as machinations and falsifications performed by the white and black clergy, artists, architects, sculptors during 1400 A.D. - 2000 A.D. or misinterpretations and misdatings of events taking place in 1000 A.D.– 1500 A.D.

Issues with the mainstream Word History : there are no chronicles irrefutably proven to be older than 1400 A.D. Subjective methods of dating documents and/or artifacts used arbitrarily, the objective methods of dating evaded. The famous radiocarbon-14C dating method lost its precision due to numerous nuclear tests in 1945-1964 and doesn't stand the black box test (alleged age of sample to test has to be told first. Sic !). Radiocarbon-14C initial calibration was made on samples from 'ancient' Egypt, the age of samples was set arbitrarily. Astronomy contradicts consensual history. Ptolemy is reliably datable to XVI cy. All solar and lunar eclipses described in chronicles dated prior to XVIcy to stress the importance of events and people acting in them actually never took place in locations at moments of time therein indicated. 6000 years long Chinese History is even more bogus than European . It is high time for the mainstream historians to stop bickering and to re-start the world history as science. Genetics re-started that already .

  • The Aeneid (/ɨˈniːɪd/; Latin: Aenēis [ae̯ˈneːɪs]) is a Latin epic poem, written by Virgil between 29 and 19 BC, that tells the legendary story of Aeneas, a Trojan who travelled to Italy, where he became the ancestor of the Romans. It comprises 9,896 lines in dactylic hexameter. The first six of the poem's twelve books tell the story of Aeneas's wanderings from Troy to Italy, and the poem's second half tells of the Trojans' ultimately victorious war upon the Latins, under whose name Aeneas and his Trojan followers are destined to be subsumed. The hero Aeneas was already known to Greco-Roman legend and myth, having been a character in the Iliad, composed in the 8th century BC. Virgil took the disconnected tales of Aeneas's wanderings, his vague association with the foundation of Rome and a personage of no fixed characteristics other than a scrupulous pietas, and fashioned this into a compelling founding myth or national epic that at once tied Rome to the legends of Troy, explained the Punic wars, glorified traditional Roman virtues and legitimized the Julio-Claudian dynasty as descendants of the founders, heroes and gods of Rome and Troy.

    Amazon.com Review
Arma virumque cano: "I sing of warfare and a man at war." Long the bane of second-year Latin students thrust into a rhetoric of sweeping, seemingly endless sentences full of difficult verb forms and obscure words, Virgil's Aeneid finds a helpful translator in Robert Fitzgerald, who turns the lines into beautiful, accessible American English. Full of betrayal, heartache, seduction, elation, and violence, the Aeneid is the great founding epic of the Roman empire. Its pages sing of the Roman vision of self, the Roman ideal of what it meant to be a citizen of the world's greatest power. The epic's force carries across the centuries, and remains essential reading.

    From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Princeton scholar Fagles follows up his celebrated Iliad and Odyssey with a new, fast-moving, readable rendition of the national epic of ancient Rome. Virgil's long-renowned narrative follows the Trojan warrior Aeneas as he carries his family from his besieged, fallen home, stops in Carthage for a doomed love affair, visits the underworld and founds in Italy, through difficult combat, the settlements that will become, first the Roman republic, and then the empire Virgil knew. Recent translators (such as Allen Mandelbaum) put Virgil's meters into English blank verse. Fagles chooses to forgo meter entirely, which lets him stay literal when he wishes, and grow eloquent when he wants: "Aeneas flies ahead, spurring his dark ranks on and storming/ over the open fields like a cloudburst wiping out the sun." A substantial preface from the eminent classicist Bernard Knox discusses Virgil's place in history, while Fagles himself appends a postscript and notes. Scholars still debate whether Virgil supported or critiqued the empire's expansion; Aeneas' story might prompt new reflection now, when Americans are already thinking about international conflict and the unexpected costs of war. Fagles's new version of Virgil's epic delicately melds the stately rhythms of the original to a contemporary cadence. Having previously produced well-received translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey, he illuminates the poem's Homeric echoes while remaining faithful to Virgil's distinctive voice. Pious Aeneas, passionate Dido, and raging Turnus are driven by the desires and rivalries of the gods-but even the gods recognize their obeisance to fate, and to the foretold Roman Empire that will produce Augustus, Virgil's patron. The excellent introduction, by Bernard Knox, gives historical and literary context, and both Knox and Fagles convincingly argue the epic's continuing relevance. Fagles, writing of Virgil's sense of "the price of empire," notes that "it seems to be a price we keep on paying, in the loss of blood and treasure, time-worn faith and hard-won hope, down to the present day."

    Very readable
    By SkookumPete
There is no such thing as a "best" translation, only translations that suit one's purpose. If you want to read the Aeneid as a gripping story, Fagles's version does very well. I have just finished reading book 4, and Dido's fury, as set against the implacable higher purpose of Aeneas, has perhaps never been as vividly, even scarily, portrayed.

On the other hand, it could be argued that Fagles's verse does not convey the stately or epic quality of the Latin in the way that, for instance, Fitzgerald's does. A short comparison may suffice:

"sed nullis ille mouetur / fletibus aut uoces ullas tractabilis audit; / fata obstant placidasque uiri deus obstruit auris." (Vergil)

"But no tears move Aeneas now. / He is deaf to all appeals. He won't relent. / The Fates bar the way / and heaven blocks his gentle, human ears." (Fagles)

"But no tears moved him, no one's voice would he / Attend to tractably. The fates opposed it; / God's will blocked the man's once kindly ears." (Fitzgerald)

Fitzgerald's version is closer to the Latin (other than not using the present tense), better reflects its formal nature, and achieves a Vergilian metrical effect with the three successive beats of "God's will blocked." But Fagles's free and fluid rendition is undoubtedly more engaging to the modern reader.

Occasionally Fagles does introduce a modern idiom that is trite or jarring. For instance, when the sea-nymph speeds Aeneas's ship on its way in Book 10, she does so skillfully ("haud ignara modi") because she "knows the ropes".

The book has a useful introduction, a few notes, and a pronouncing glossary. Fagles's postscript is, however, a tedious pastiche of quotations from previous critics and could have been omitted.

The "other" side of the Trojan war
    By D. Roberts
Publius Vergilius Maro was commisioned by Caesar Augustus to author a national epic for Rome. The work which Virgil composed for this purpose was the Aeneid. It is an epic poem that tells the story of a minor character from Homer's Iliad who leads a rag-tag band from the smouldering ruins of Troy in order to found a "New Troy" to the west: Rome. It is in the Aeneid, not the Iliad (as most people who have not read the works tend to believe) that we see the spectacle of the Trojan Horse & the famous line "I do not trust Greeks bearing gifts." The Iliad ends with the death of Hektor - before the plan of the Trojan Horse is devised by Odysseus. The Odyssey picks up after the sack of Troy. The Aeneid fills in the gaps & narrates the story of the few Trojans who escape the wrath of the Greeks. According to legend, Romulus & Remes (the two brothers who eventually founded the city itself) were descendents of Aeneas. As is usual, Fitzgerald's translation is top notch. I have read Mandelbaum's rendition as well & much prefer Mr. Fitzgerald. The book also contains a useful glossary & postscript which help elucidate the allusions to Hannibal & Cleopatra which the Romans of Virgil's day would have picked up right away, but which might be unfamiliar to modern day readers. Also, it is HIGHLY recommended that one read the Iliad & the Odyssey before embarking on Virgil's work. [...] But, for a quick answer: the reason that Juno (Hera in the Greek) has a vendetta against Aeneas is due to the fact that he is Trojan. This all derives from the judgment of Paris when Juno was "jilted" by the bribe that Aphrodite offered Paris (also a Trojan). To offer any more info at this point would be too great of a digression, but what I will say is that this work is NOT (I repeat NOT) for someone to merely pick up & dive into w/out doing his or her pre-requisite reading. Do your homework, become familiar with the myths & tales of what has gone on before, then read the Aeneid. You will be glad you did, for this is an extraordinary epic. Also, for those who harbor the ambition, the university of Oxford professor Peter Levi has recently written a wonderful, succinct biography of Virgil. "The Death Of Virgil" by Hermann Broch is a mind-blowing masterpiece as well. Indeed, one can never get enough Virgil.

imagine that he almost burned it
    By M. H. Bayliss
Although Virgil spent years writing the Aeneid, by his death, he felt that it was imperfect and asked that it be burned. Luckily for all concerned, his request was denied or we'd never have this epic. If you are new to Greek and Roman epics, I'd recommend starting with the Iliad and the Odyssey first. Not only will most novices find them more readable (especially the Odyssey), any reader will pick up important background information that will help immeasurably in following the Aeneid. Although I'm a huge fan of the Aeneid and have read many of the books in the original Latin, I'd suggest to most readers just to read books 1,2,4 and 6 unless you are really drawn in. It's not that the other books are not great (they are), it's just that unless you are a specialist, you won't want to read all about the battles and extra stuff -- book 4 is the love story of Dido and Aeneus and for many is the highlight of the poem. Book 6 is the trip to to the underworld which is so important to later writers and poets like Dante, TS Eliot, etc.... The fall of Troy is contained in books 1 and 2. I enjoy Fitzgerald's translation, but as an amateur Latinist, I prefer Allan Mandelbaum's translation with Moser's illustrations. When I was translating from the Latin, only Mandelbaum was so close to the original that he could help a student. I think Mandelbaum is a genius for rendering the poem so close to the original. It's unfair to call him wooden -- Virgil wrote the whole thing in Dacytlic hexameter which is hardly wooden in Latin, although it can be repetitive at times. Not to worry -- he used a lot of spondaic substititions (altering a long, short short with a long, long) to vary the meter.
So, if you just want a taste, read books 1,2,4 and 6 and if you love it, by all means read the whole epic.

Scale-Space Theory in Computer Vision (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science), by Tony Lindeberg

The problem of scale pervades both the natural sciences and the vi sual arts. The earliest scientific discussions concentrate on visual per ception (much like today!) and occur in Euclid's (c. 300 B. C. ) Optics and Lucretius' (c. 100-55 B. C. ) On the Nature of the Universe. A very clear account in the spirit of modern "scale-space theory" is presented by Boscovitz (in 1758), with wide ranging applications to mathemat ics, physics and geography. Early applications occur in the cartographic problem of "generalization", the central idea being that a map in order to be useful has to be a "generalized" (coarse grained) representation of the actual terrain (Miller and Voskuil 1964). Broadening the scope asks for progressive summarizing. Very much the same problem occurs in the (realistic) artistic rendering of scenes. Artistic generalization has been analyzed in surprising detail by John Ruskin (in his Modern Painters), who even describes some of the more intricate generic "scale-space sin gularities" in detail: Where the ancients considered only the merging of blobs under blurring, Ruskin discusses the case where a blob splits off another one when the resolution is decreased, a case that has given rise to confusion even in the modern literature.

    A great read.
    By Joe Sage
Valley Forge, Valley Forge offers an intimate look at Frank Castle's relationship with the military. Corrupt generals who sent Barracuda after the Punisher in a previous story line now seek to hunt him with special ops soldiers, who they know Castle won't kill, having been a soldier and followed orders. The generals mistakenly think this will give the soldiers an advantage over Castle.

At the heart of the story is an investigation of the way that various aspects of the military interact with each other. The corrupt generals are at the top, the competent commanders are the ones taking orders and not giving them, and the soldiers are pawns in a game of greed and power. We get a close look at Colonel Howe, a Vietnam vet who leads the Delta unit that is sent after Castle. Howe is sober, competent and motivated through his ideals. But he learns some important lessons as to just where he stands in the military and what his superiors think of him. I would've been interested to get more insight into the soldiers who actually go after Castle. They are most like the Punisher in that they are experienced soldiers, who take orders and know their job better than anyone else. They may be a few experiences short of becoming Punisher's themselves.

The dynamics of the command structure are highlighted by the insertion of excerpts from a fictitious Vietnam book called "Valley Forge, Valley Forge: The Slaughter of A Marine Garrison and the Birth of the Punisher." These text based portions of the graphic novel tell the story of a catastrophic battle only Frank Castle survived. A story Ennis himself covered in the Punisher Born title:Punisher MAX: Born The book is written by a brother of a soldier that died at Valley Forge and as the title suggests investigates the roots of Punisher's actions. The story of the battle is told through a series of interviews with witnesses and family members of those who died in the battle.

The illustration by Goran Parlov is of the same spare, no-nonsense drawing that has been used in previous issues of Punisher. Parlov gets the details across with an accuracy and competence that is laudable in it's near transparency. One doesn't notice the drawings, but they convey the action in frame after frame in a style that owes more to film noir than Jack Kirby. It is unflinching in its depictions of violent battles and therefore often very graphic. Not for the faint of heart.

In the final story line of his run on the Punisher, Ennis restates the case that he has been making throughout. Frank Castle is the both the foot soldier and general of his very own war on crime. He is motivated by a dark force, one born in Vietnam. The Punisher is the fallout of a war that never should have happened, a war that was a crime against humanity, brought on by power hungry warmongers who care nothing for human life. And with out really mentioning recent wars and leaders, Ennis makes it clear that corruption is ubiquitous in the Punisher's world, from the lowest street gang, to the highest offices of the land. Though he is an unrepentant murderer, the Punisher remains uncorrupted, uncompromising and unstoppable. Does that make him a hero?

the end of the "REAL" punisher
    By Daniel Walter Cevelin
I've followed the max print since Born, and now it has all rapped together to complete the greatest punisher arc ever created. I feel that ennis really entices the story line and makes an awesome portrayal of the marvel vigilante. In this issue, Frank Castle is being hunted by some crooked top government officials. They're convinced that he has information that could incriminate them all for things that happened in previous issues. So first they sent Barracuda, well that didnt work, so now they sent a squad of special forces to take him down, "alive". Theres alot of vietnam references dating back to the Born issue, which helps to manifest the ending of this issue. The artwork of Parlov is not my favorite of the series, i woulda much rathered fernandez or larosa, but i guess beggers cant be choosers, its still a good read. Its a shame that ennis is ending his run on the series, the punisher will never be the same. He has resurrected the punisher from the dead, I only hope that this portrayal of the punisher will continue on. The Max series is not technically finished but for me it is, ennis paints the picture and i dont think there will be better.

    The end
    By N. Durham
No other writer has gotten The Punisher like Garth Ennis. Since making the move from Marvel Knights to Marvel's adult-themed MAX imprint, Ennis has had a nearly flawless run on a series that took Marvel's criminal killing vigilante in an ultra-gritty, realistic direction that pulled no punches. With Valley Forge, Valley Forge; Ennis' long run writing The Punisher comes to a close, a run that I for one had wished would never end. Well, you know what they say about "all good things" and such, and while Valley Forge, Valley Forge isn't as perfect a read as many of Ennis' previous Punisher MAX storyarcs, it ties everything together that Ennis has set up over the years, as Frank Castle learns just who was behind tipping off Barracuda in Long Cold Dark, and it is an enemy that this time around Frank may not be able to take down. With ties to his pre-Punisher days in Vietnam, this promises an outcome that will definitely not be pretty. While Valley Forge, Valley Forge is certainly engaging and page-turning, its one big flaw happens to be in the pacing. During the chapters of this TPB pop up segments of a book written by the brother of one of the main characters of Ennis' Punisher: Born mini-series. While this does end up playing a semi-important role in the proceedings here, this breaks up the pacing, and simply takes too much away from what's going on. This may not be such a big flaw for others, but for a die-hard fan of Ennis' Punisher run, this hurts the book more than helps it. Goran Parlov is on board once again as the artist, and his work seems more tighter here than on Long Cold Dark. All in all, it's sad to see Ennis leave The Punisher, but he goes out firing, and leaves a legacy as being the sole writer to really get what the character and the world Frank Castle lives in is truly all about.

    Review

“This book is described as a comprehensive, gold-standard reference on the subject . . . Regardless, the authors should be lauded for their efforts, and I look forward to the second edition being an expanded, 2-volume set.”  (Vet Med Today, 15 December 2013)

“Throughout the book, the contributors have cleverly integrated aspects of veterinary medicine, surgery and physiotherapy to highlight the value of an integrated approach to the rehabilitation of the canine athlete and, in so doing, may help further promote the value of this branch of veterinary work within the UK. In addition, the book places a strong emphasis on the importance of appropriate training for all rehabilitation specialists, and this can only be applauded.”  (Veterinary Record, 7 September 2013)

“There have been very few veterinary textbooks that since I left college in 1979 I have really felt they are a “must have”.  This book is one of those. . . This is a big step forward for veterinary medicine, and I will certainly be keeping my copy ready to hand in the practice.”  (Veterinary Practice News, 1 September 2013)

“This is a masterful achievement in content, readability, and usefulness. The text is perfectly illustrated with images of extraordinary quality. The authors have successfully addressed the needs of a diverse audience of animal health professionals faced with a wide range of injuries and other physical disabilities in their canine patients.”  (Doody’s, 16 August 2013)

Basic science blends with veterinary insights and applications to the athletic animal in a coverage recommended for both vets and those working with canine athletes. Keys to the latest rehabilitation processes, descriptions of clinical cases, and photos and illustrations throughout pack a reference that is filled with observations and applications from an international list of experts. The result is a pick for canine trainers and veterinary collections alike.”  (Midwest Books Reviews, 1 July 2013)

    Not just for veterinary professionals
    By Amazon Customer
Although this book is written primarily for practitioners in the veterinary field, I highly recommend it as a resource for serious dog sports enthusiasts, instructors, and coaches. Chapters 1, 2 and 10 cover a good portion of the materials Chris Zink presents in her highly regarded "Coaching the Canine Athlete" seminars. (If you've been to one of her seminars and wished you had taken better notes, here's your chance). From there, recognized experts in various fields present extremely medically detailed information on the background, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of injuries and syndromes known to occur in dog sports. If you have not had any medical training, I do strongly recommend obtaining the Kindle format of this book. This makes it very painless for you to research any medical term you do not know as you can simply tap it to obtain a definition and/or jump to a detailed article on the web that will educate you as to the term's meaning.

If you have ever had to rehab a dog after an injury, this book will help you with a deeper understanding of the injury. It is particularly important to have detailed information like this available to you since you will be a critical partner with the rehabilitation technicians in obtaining and maintaining the best outcome.

If you have not experienced the unfortunate situation of having an injured or low functioning canine athlete and are instead looking for information that will enhance performance and prevent injuries, then you will be particularly interested in the chapters on Locomotion and Athletic Performance, the Role of Nutrition, Manual Therapy (aka Massage), as well as the Conditioning and Retraining chapter.

If you want to know what is current in Dog rehab and conditioning, this is the definitive text.
    By Virginia
Dr, Zink has brought together the best of the developing specialty of canine sports medicine in this text - while technical as it is for a specialist audience, it is also readable which means that those in the hinterlands removed from the few centers of excellence can evaluate what is known and what is available for the training and treatment of the canine athlete - whether in the performance ring or in the field.

Great for the veterinary PT and rehab student!
    By animaldr
After the first few chapters of physiology, which are boring, but necessary, this book is great. I haven't started training yet, but will do so in a few months and I am so looking forward to it. What would make this book better would be a CD or web link to videos for the exercises and diagnostics.

Dictionary of the North-West Semitic Inscriptions (Handbook of Oriental Studies/Handbuch Der Orientalistik), by J. Hoftijzer, K. Johgeling

The North-West Semitic epigraphic contributes considerably to our understanding of the Old Testament and of the Ugaritic texts and to our knowledge of the North-West Semitic languages as such. This dictionary is concerned with the North-West Semitic material found in inscriptions, papyri and ostraca in Phoenician, Punic, Hebrew, various forms of Aramaic, Ammonite, Edomite, the language of Deir Alla et cetera. The material covers the period from ca. 1000 B.C. to ca. 300 A.D. Besides translations, the entries include discussions and full references to scholarly literature. The book is a translated, updated and considerably augmented edition of Jean & Hoftijzer, "Dictionnaire des inscriptions semitiques de l'ouest." The additions concern newly found texts as well as references to new scholarly literature. The book is an indispensable tool for research in North-West Semitic epigraphy, on the Old Testament and on Ugaritic texts, and for Semitic linguistics. Please note that this version is an unrevised reprint of the original version published in 1995."

'"The way in wich [the authors] have documented and presented their evidence will certainly guarantee that this dictionary will not only be a major source of information, but also one of the hall-marks in this field of study for many years to come.'
C.H.J. van der Merwe, "Journal of Northwest Semitic Languages, 1997.
'"The value and usefulness of the Dictionary" prepared by Hoftijzer and Jongeling is not diminished. In this new updated edition the epigraphic material from various languages is presented together. It is possible to compare froms and meanings. Rich documentation widens opportunities for more exact interpretation and for further research...Those who contributed in various ways to its successful realization (cf. xvi-xvii), deserve gratitude of those who will benefit from this work. And even more the gratitude has to be expressed to both authors of this magnificent dictionary, so rich and so exact.'
    Stanislav Segert, "Archmv Orientalnm, 1997.
'"Hoftijzer and Jongeling deserve our praisefor giving us this major research tool. DNWSI represents years of painstaking work, carried out with extreme care and expert diligence. It will serve scholars of Northwest Semitic well for years to come.'
Gary A. Rendsburg, "Journal of the American Oriental Society, 1998.
'"It seems that every student of Semitics and related areas has studied at least some of the epigraphic material from biblical times. This could not have been done properly without this excellent tool, the work of the late Charles-F. Jean and his successor, Jacob Hoftijzer. The latter eminent scholar and his colleague, K. Jongeling, have gifted the scholarly world with a new, much enlarged and most welcome edition of that work.'
Schlomo Izre'el, "Israel Oriental Studies, 1998.

'"It deserves a place in every serious academic library, as well as many personal libraries."' David W. Baker, "Ashland Theological Journal," 2004.

    A Magisterial Work
    By R. Enos
This dictionary of the vocabulary of the Old Canaanite, Phoenician, Punic, Moabite, Ammonite, Hebrew, Aramaic, and other ancient Northwest Semitic inscriptions is a state-of-the-art tool for specialists, yet it is so extraordinarily well organized and its material is so clearly presented that even those with no more than a nodding acquaintance with Semitics will find it easy to use.
And many non-specialists _should_ use this dictionary: they will find it immensely useful. For example, rabbis and pastors will find that when used judiciously it can provide as rich a store of illustrative material for messages on the Hebrew scriptures as Moulton and Milligan's _The Vocabulary of the Greek New Testament_ does for sermons from the New Testament.
The dictionary's greatest defect, in my view, is a relatively minor one: the authors' imperfect mastery of English sometimes leads them astray. For instance, the dictionary states that in Imperial Aramaic _bl'd hn_ (I use an apostrophe to represent 'ayin) means "excepted if," an expression which seems to have gone out of fashion among native speakers of English in the sixteenth century. Since the dictionary does not identify the language of an inscription when it quotes it, beginners may complain that it is often difficult for them to know just what they are looking at. But this is probably a virtue, not a defect: those beginners need to be reminded that they are, after all, using a grown-up's tool.
...this two-volume, 1300-page work is a steal. I have wept at its beauties.
