Silly but somewhat humorous

This book is completely useless but somewhat entertaining. The prose accompanying each equation is witty. This book would be a reasonable cheesy gift for the person who has everything. The first chapter has an overview of basic algebra, including the all-important order of operations, so it might even be a useful gift for someone whose math education ended in junior high.

On the negative side, the "Dating and Relationships" section is completely written for a male perspective and generally invokes some negative stereotypes of women. The book could definitely use more egalitarian language to give it a broader appeal.

The calculator included with the book (packaged in the front cover) does not have an exponent function, even though most of the equations use an exponent. Did the publisher's marketing department even glance at the text before picking the gimmicky cover?

Best buy two

This is the sort of book you cannot wait to share with friends. Alas, as I've learned several times over, it's also the sort of book friends are reluctant to return after you loan it to them. Besides being funny and clever and near impossible to put down, it's actually useful, in the same way that a Rubik's Cube is (used to be) useful: to transport you into the realm of problems that wink, "I have a solution! Find me!" I cannot recommend this book too highly.

It's light cheeky humor that shouldn't be taken seriously

This book has some entertaining cheeky humor that most will appreciate, but it's best for those who don't have math backgrounds and who can enjoy it for the components of the analyses (writing style included). Even the author (or maybe even the editor) can see is that none of these equations are meant to be taken any more seriously than a Cosmo quiz, and that's what really makes this book bearable. For example, in a question on whether to follow a self-help book's advice, "Geek Logik" gets 1/16th of the effect of any other self-help book if the equation is followed. There are other unintended effects that in most modeling would be seriously questioned, but that's not the intent of this book.

The equations mostly come out as "if good factors > bad factors, then do it", with logical "ands" (i.e., both things need to happen) represented by multiplication and logical "ors" (i.e., at least one thing needs to happen) represented by additions. There are the occassional quadratics, cubics, and square roots to give a veneer of mathematic complexity, but most of these can be reduced to simpler factors and reasons. It can be fun to think about what the author intended, and the extra work put in to make it more substantial than a "sum up the score points" can be appreciated (even if there's no basis for correctness).

The book is inexpensive, so buy it as a silly coffee table book that can be brushed through in an hour; don't buy it for someone only because they have a math, engineering, or physics background. If they don't like this style of humor, then it will be a dud. Anyone buying it for the cover's marketing (i.e., the "foolproof equations") will likewise be sorely disappointed.

my son says thank you

so my son takes a popcicle to school in his backpack and is surprised when it explodes all over his books. I got a call from the librarian telling me I need to replace two of his books. sticker price was like $400. thank you amazon! although my son will be paying his allowance back for the better part of the near future, at least we got a great deal on his replacement books.

This is a good 6th grade book. Make sure you order the student workbook to go with it. My only complaint is the layout is a bit confusing for some students (the book, not the workbook. The workbook is great).

Georgina Palffy worked as a travel editor for Cadogan Guides, a political and media analyst for an intelligence organization, a foreign affairs journalist at the "Guardian" and D"aily Telegraph" newspapers, and an art reviewer for a London listings magazine. She has also lived and worked in Rome for several years. Since moving to New Zealand in 2002, she and her family have been living 100 yards from the beach in Napier, art deco capital of Hawke's Bay. Married to a New Zealander, she didn't really want to come to the southern hemisphere in the first place, but has been converted to the easygoing charms of life on a South Pacific island.

DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION!!!

Like all DK books, The Religions Book is an excellent resource. Beautiful, formatted well, easy to read. Fascinating subjects broken down into understandable overviews and reflections. You cannot go wrong when you buy a DK Publishing book. They are always written by reputable scholars, full of incredible illustrations or pictures, and a pure joy to read. You rarely even realize you are LEARNING! This book is no different. Buy it.

BUT . . . DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION. I have never seen a worse Kindle book. Whoever formatted this book for Kindle should be sent back to school (or prison?). You cannot read it on Kindle. You cannot read it on the PC. It pops up in a little box of tiny text that you cannot even zoom in comfortably to read! You cannot highlight. Just a terrible experience.

It really is not fair that an awesome book like this gets its reviews skewed because whoever was in charge of the Kindle version RUINED it.

I own a dozen or more DK books and treasure them all. The Kindle version is garbage, but the book itself is nearly perfect.

Kindle version is horrible

While the content of the book is great, the Kindle formatting is terrible.
It is completely inconsistent with every other Kindle book I have purchased.
Supposedly you can zoom to enlarge text and double tap to see all sidebars.
None of those features work.
Double tapping actually seems to randomly jump you back and forth between different sections of the book.
It seems that one other book in this series has formatting problems as pointed out on the kindle order page.
All of the DK Publishing books in this series need to be re-assessed as to readability.

LOVE

I truly love this kind of book. I have the 'Philosophy' and 'Psychology' book both by the same author (DK Publishing). This book takes each major religion and really breaks it down to its essential beliefs. This book is also an easy read and almost a short story format. People who love to learn but do not have the time to read a whole book would really benefit from books like this by DK. This book in particular really answered a lot of questions I have had on other religions without being bias. It is so difficult these days to find a book on religions that is not bias and to me that's yet another reason to love DK publishing. Something else that this book covered which I really appreciated was it went into the different kinds of Christians.

This book is theology so there is interpenetration and points of view which the reader must decide on. This book is a great resource to have for any questions you may have on religion. If you are looking for a book that has all of the major religions in the world with clear information that is not bias then look no further.

From the Author
After writing about life in a Medieval castle (Winter's Heat), then life in a Medieval town (Summer's Storm) it only made sense to take a look at a Medieval manor. These small holdings were the backbone of the country. Lucky for me that after two books my publisher still wanted more. Even luckier, I still had two more FitzHenry brothers to explore. Thus Spring's Fury was born.

I chose to write about Gilliam first because I hadn't yet even seen Geoffrey in my imagination although I was aware of him. Although I hadn't done it on purpose, Gilliam reminded me of my second son Justin. Like Gilliam, Justin was then a curly-haired blond (his hair has darkened since but is still just as curly), and a very big man. Let me just say that when Justin went to freshman orientation at high school, the football coach made a beeline for him and nearly got down on his knees to beg Justin to join the team. Justin, who now wears a 53 jacket, refused.

What I had yet to discover back then was that Justin has Asperger's Syndrome, or high functioning Autism. Oh, we knew something was quite right, like how he walked as a child: step, step, step, turn; step, step, step, turn. Or the way he'd take a silver pen and move it back and forth in front of his eyes for minutes at a time to calm himself. But, he was verbal and very, very, very bright. He started his first business at fourteen, teaching people how to use their computers. No surprise that he is now a highly successful computer programmer.

I didn't know any of that back when Gilliam's story occurred to me so I let myself imagine what Justin's life might have been like if he'd lived in the Twelfth Century.

About the Author
I was ten before I realized the cosmos played a terrible joke on me. I was in the wrong century! While everyone else studied computers and listened to rock music, I wrote a history assignment in Egyptian hieroglyphics and spent endless hours designing ball gowns for Marie Antoinette. I taught myself what every true lady must know: how to sew a fine seam (by hand), to embroider skillfully, and to play an instrument (piano, and nothing later than Beethoven, thank you). I did my best to fit in with the rest of modern society, running two property management companies and inventing an electric lock, only to realize happiness for me meant historical research. Now, writing is my time machine and words recreate the vitality of eras where I feel more at home. Not only do I experience the drama of their time, but I do so with indoor plumbing. Enjoy!

"Spring's Fury," Denise Domning's third book in her five-book series, "The Graistan Chronicles," is another adventure in true medieval-flavored reading. Although the book can easily be read as a stand-alone book, "Spring's Fury" features a hero and heroine that were introduced in book one of the series, "Winter's Heat." Would recommend reading at least the first book of the series before reading this third book to get a better feel for the events and emotions occurring herein.

Gilliam FitzHenry, the fourth son of Henry of Graistan, has been handed his life's dream -- a keep of his own. Gilliam is having to rebuild Ashby because it had been partially burned down during a siege (that occurred in "Winter's Heat"). Gilliam wants to marry the wild, unruly, daughter of the previous ruler of Ashby, Nicola, because {1} the people of Ashby love her, and {2) she knows how to manage Ashby into prosperity.

Nicola, however, has no desire whatsoever to marry any man, much less the man she saw kill her father (during said siege). Nicola has been spoiled by her father, John of Ashby, who allowed her to train with his men. In true youthful visions of grandeur, Nicola believes she is capable of ruling and protecting Ashby on her own -- if only her overlord, Rannulf of Graistan, would see the light.

Rannulf, however, is more than willing to marry off Nicola to get the willful, trouble-making, escape-attempting ward off his hands. "Spring's Fury" is an exciting account of how Nicola tries to escape her marriage and Gilliam's efforts to catch and subdue his new bride. The book is full of adventures, romance, and the day-to-day intricacies of medieval life.

The book is also filled with two well-developed, intriguing secondary characters who add depth to the story; namely, {1} Tilda (Nicola's "more sister than servant" best friend) and {2} Jocelyn (Gilliam's weakling-minded squire). A plethora of other villagers also add realism and insightfulness to the tale.

A Hero and a Heroine you just have to like

Read the book in one sitting and I loved it! There were just enough conflicts that made it really interesting and it was quite refreshing to have a heroine who was tough, not always angry, not a simpering fool and very like-able. There was enough historical detail of where they lived and how they lived without going overboard.

Let me start by saying I loved this book. I had to buy it used as I could not find a copy that was new.
This is a fantastic story. First the main hero of the story does not belittle or mistreat the heroine (Nicola) as they do in many of the period pieces. He lets her warm up to him and even seems to enjoy sparing with her. In fact it is he who requests that his brother let him marry her. He knows that to see his people (which was more than he could hope for)through the winter he needs her to make sure that all the winter preparations are taken care of. Therefore amazing her in the fact that someone needs her! Also the fact that he finds her beautiful (as non one else has) and not the giantesse of Ashby makes her come to love him.
There is also a side plot where Gilliam is training a new quire (Jos) who does not know how to be a little boy let alone a squire. It is fun to see him grow up and gain responsibility throughout the book.
This book has it all intrigue, deception, a woman warrior, growing love and a strong woman character.

Evocation

OMEROS, the eight-thousand-line poem that undoubtedly clinched Derek Walcott's Nobel Prize in 1992, is a lithe glistening marvel. Like some mythological creature, it twists and turns before your eyes, seldom going straight, but shifting in space and time, sometimes terrible, sometimes almost familiar, always fascinating. Book-length poems (I am thinking of things like Byron's DON JUAN, Browning's THE RING AND THE BOOK, and Vikram Seth's THE GOLDEN GATE) might almost be thought of as novels in verse. Almost, but not quite. Most novels tell their story in more or less linear fashion, but poetry works not by explanation but by evocation -- and at that, Walcott is a master.

And what does he evoke? First and foremost, the people and landscape of his native Caribbean island of St. Lucia. The watercolor on the cover, as though by a tropical Winslow Homer, is in fact by the poet himself. Google his paintings and you will see his extraordinary eye for character and color, qualities that shine equally clearly through his words. Omeros is the Greek spelling of Homer, and on one level the poem is a West Indies version of the Iliad, with two fishermen, Achille and Hector, fighting over the beauty of a local Helen, housemaid to a British expatriate couple. The poem begins in epic fashion with the building and naming of boats, and there are other Homeric allusions throughout its seven long sections. But much of its strength comes from the fact that it does not translate the Iliad into a petty local soap opera, but rather starts from the reality of people and a place that Walcott knows well, and elevates it by evoking a classical ancestry.

Furthermore, this story is only the armature around which many other histories may be spun. Some are stories of conflict, such as the great naval Battle of the Saints, fought between the British and the French in 1792 in the waters around the islands. One of the midshipmen in that battle may have been a distant relative of Major Plunkett, the retired soldier who has lived on the island for many years with his Irish wife Maud, employers of the beautiful Helen; the Major's own experiences in India and in the Western Desert are another part of the narrative. There is also St. Lucia's history as one of the points of arrival at the end of the Middle Passage in the slave trade, and in one of the most striking sections Achille is led by a flying sea-swift back in space and time to rejoin his own ancestors in their river village in West Africa. Other sections of the poem deal with the exile, starvation, and massacre of the plains Indians in the 19th century, as seen through the eyes of contemporary activist and fellow artist Catherine Weldon. And behind all that is Walcott's lament for the loss of the original native inhabitants of the islands, the Aruac peoples.

Though epic in structure and content, this is also a very personal poem. Walcott himself appears as a figure in it, in settings as diverse as Brookline, Massachusetts (where he wrote much of it), and cities such as Lisbon, Istanbul, London, and Dublin. He portrays himself as wounded in love, mourning his own lost Helen, and trying to understand his own biracial heritage and spiritual relationship to a father he hardly knew; it is not coincidental that the Wikipedia article on the poet includes a photograph of President Obama carrying one of Walcott's books. In the beautiful final section of the book, Homer himself takes the poet by the hand and leads him through the ashes of a volcano, like Virgil escorting Dante through the Inferno. Somehow all the many themes of the book get gathered into one, and three millennia of love and conflict, loss and inspiration, come together in this one place at this one time and in the mind of this one man.

Masterpiece.

This epic poem is a wonder, and should be considered a masterpiece. It is so layered and thoughtful, dreamlike and emotional, it was hard to put down. The lyrical quality of the poem is exquisite, and the trauma in the poem troubling. It calls out the colonialism of Europeans on Africa and the Caribbean while presenting the damaging aftereffects. How does a culture continue after such experience? The poem explores that.

I have been using this book since I began teaching design and the design process 16 years ago and LOVE IT! BUT, for some reason this version has removed a number of very helpful images and drawings. SO, I recommend ONLY the original Brown cover or the NEW UPDATED CLASSIC in BROWN cover.

A MUST READ: I first found the Universal Traveler Creative Problem-Solving Guide in its 1976 edition, and since then have kept it by my side to review frequently. It is a special treasure of tips on getting organized mentally to solve problems and to meet life's challenges. It balances critical thinking with one's psychological factors superbly. It presents reaching goals and problems--solving as a journey in life, and uses travel as the metaphorical means of conveying its ideas. It starts at the very beginning of one's thought processes to analyze problems, to set goals and to reach solutions and goals. Its life problem-solving strategies are "whole" methods that combine mind, sense and emotion. I like the 1976, edition, with its delightful historical, turn-of-the-century pen sketches. The new, 1991, edition is reorganized and presents the authors' evolutionary travels in problem-solivng adventure, and has late 20th century pen sketched metaphors. This is a valuable book to have. It is a good modern companion to the Dale Carnegie books "How To Win Friends and Influence People" and "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living". It is a great choice for helping to set and met New Year, New Century and New Milenium resolutions.
