A great buy!

I bought the book because I'm a huge fan of Kubrick's work. Still today, after having watched "The Shining" dozens of times, I'm left with a notion of: "Did I really get it all? Did I fully understand what Kubrick was saying?" And the answer is always "no"! After having read Paul Whittington's book, the movie feels all fresh to me. Other than answering every possible question, Whittington unlocks doors and provides the reader with new room for interpretation. He delves into every character's psyche and explains with great detail their relationships. Nietzsche and especially Freud serve as the foundations for Whittington's psychoanalysis of the main character, Jack Torrance. Lots and lots of intriguing fact and detail is pointed out, that can be witnessed and discovered going frame-by-frame, if you own a copy of the film. Very impressive!

Paul Whittington is also a highly regarded filmmaker and stop-motion artist. His storytelling ability shines in this book as it's compellingly written, comfortable to read and easy to follow. For the hardcore Kubrick-fans, it's packed with facts that add a whole new angle to the viewing experience! ...Should come with every copy they sell!

Unlock the Cage

Whether you are beginning to feel you are losing your way as a parent, or you just want to step back and think through how you are doing, this book could be a very useful first port of call. I read this and picked up some very helpful new insights, not just about how I interact with my child, but also about how I view myself. It's an interesting mix of down-to-earth practical tips and theoretical/psychological insights into the dynamics of parent-child relationships, all thoroughly backed up by in-depth research. It's also bang up to date with highly relevant sections on cyber-issues. For me its main strength is its light touch. It's written in a straightforward style with touches of humour and steers clear of value-judgements. The reader is led on a journey of self-discovery at the end of which you will feel set free to be the sort of parent you want to be.

Jackie Charley and Greg Nazvanov have succeeded in producing a practical, extremely readable book which is based on research, and which seeks to offer fad-free advice to parents of children of all ages.
In their own words, they are `passionate to see people wake up to their own potential'. I would recommend this book to everyone whose aim it is to parent from a position of empowerment and confidence.

In August 1917, at the height of the First World War, a small biplane landed on the makeshift flight deck of HMS Furious - the first ever carrier landing in aviation history. This small act ushered in a new era. Two decades later, when Britain stood on the brink of another World War, the Royal Navy had a small fleet of aircraft carriers, with several more nearing completion. When war came the newly-formed Fleet Air Arm would demonstrate that what it lacked in modern equipment, it made up for in skill and daring.

The first of these carriers were converted from existing ships. Then in 1938 HMS Ark Royal was launched - Britain's first purpose built carrier. Its design set the standard for what was to come. The "Ark" was followed by the highly successful Illustrious Class, and then by others whose design was modified in the light of wartime experience. British fleet carriers had steel flight decks, and although smaller and able to carry less aircraft that the carriers seen in the Pacific, they were better suited to conditions in European waters. It also meant they were more resilient, and could shrug off damage that would cripple their American counterparts.

Over the next six years these British aircraft carriers would launch attacks against a major Italian naval base, attack the Italian battle fleet on the high seas, and cripple the Bismarck, so that the battleships of the Home Fleet could overtake her. They would also see service in every theatre of war, including the Pacific. Inevitably, their success came at a price. Courageous, Eagle and Ark Royal were torpedoed by U-Boats, Glorious was sunk by the guns of a German battlecruiser, and Hermes was lost to Japanese bombs. Most of the rest of the carrier fleet were damaged to some extent during their service lives, but they survived and kept on fighting.

About the Author

Angus Konstam is an acclaimed military and naval historian, and one of Osprey's most experienced and respected authors, with over 35 titles in print. These Osprey titles include British Battlecruisers 1939-45, British Motor Torpedo Boats 1939-45, and the forthcoming two-volume study; British Battleships 1939-45, all of which form part of the New Vanguard list. Other titles include Spanish Armada 1588, Pirates, British Forts in the Age of Arthur and Piracy: The Complete History. He has also written over two dozen larger books for other publishers.

A former naval officer, underwater archaeologist and maritime museum curator, Angus has a long and passionate love affair with the sea, maritime history and warships. He makes regular television and radio appearances, and has held events at the Edinburgh International Book Festival. Angus is now a full-time writer and historian, as well as being a board member of the Society of Authors, and Publishing Scotland. He currently lives in Edinburgh.

British WWII Carriers

This New Vanguard #168 is a good overview of British carriers that participated in WWII. Author Angus Konstam provides a fairly good chronicle of British carriers as they evolved and were employed in WWII.

The author begins the story in WWI when the Royal Navy led the way in naval aviation. The earliest carriers were battleships or cruisers with makeshift decks above the forward turrets and, sometimes, the aft turrets. After experience showed these hybrids to be dangerous, they altered hulls to make the first "true" carriers with a flight deck that was the length of the craft.

Konstam then delves into the interwar period in which warship design was constrained by naval treaties. Even as the US Navy converted two battlecruiser hulls into the Lexington and Saratoga and the Japanese converted a hull into Akagi, the British converted existing hulls into carriers. As war clouds darkened in Europe, the Royal Navy planned purpose built ships that became the Illustrious class carriers. All weapons design is a tradeoff in attributes and this new class carriers would trade capacity in terms of number of aircraft for armored protection. In this era, the Royal Navy made the decision that instead of carrying enough fighters to protect their carrier, they would simply button up and depend solely on AA guns and the ships' own armor to defeat an enemy attack.

Although the British carriers were certainly better protected than their American or Japanese counterparts, they could carry far fewer aircraft. The Illustrious class was restricted to only 36 aircraft (not including a deck park) while American and Japanese carriers could carry 70-100. The author delves into British designs for ships planned during the war, but finished after hostilities ceased. I would point out that this book does not cover escort carriers for the simple reason that they were not British - the RN employed American escort carriers provided under Lend Lease and would not apply to this book.

I think the author covers a lot of ground quite well if you consider that this type book can only serve as an overview. I would have liked the author to mention aircraft since the RN had only obsolete or unsuitable types and had to rely on American Lend Lease Avengers, Wildcats, Hellcats and Corsairs for the majority of their carrier aircraft by the end of the war.

This book does a decent job of introducing the reader to WWII Royal Navy carriers and I recommend it to those interested with four stars.

Good BRIEF history of British aircraft carriers.

This a very good and BRIEF history of WWII era British aircraft carriers. Booklet is about 48 pages long and enough information about each aircraft carrier covered. The first section of booklet describes the advent of carrier-based aircraft, developments, tactics, ships, etc. are discussed. The various classes of FLEET carriers that participated in the war are also described, as well as their plus & minus.

There are color plates of various ships, and plenty of black & white photos - at least 1 photo per each carrier described.

Operational histories and final outcome of each carrier that saw action in the war is given as well.

Overall, a very good booklet. It is what I wanted and expected - a BRIEF history of British carriers. Excellent resource for modelers. Ordered via Amazon and everything arrived in great condition and a few days before expected.

A little disappointed in content...or perhaps I should say, lack of content. Good book for fleet carriers and light fleet carriers, but their was no information concerning escort, assault, or strike carriers. The name of the book is British Aircraft Carriers...not British Fleet Carriers, so I believe the lack of any data concerning the escort, assault, and strike carriers makes the title misleading. Yet, it could have been so easy to correct such an oversight if only Osprey had knowledgable editors.

This book I found frustrating. At a quick glance it seems to be giving me information, but when I actually try to follow advise I come up short. It seems you my need to buy all his books to get real information out of this book. I will say I did find some useful information but was overall unhappy and was left with the feeling like a kid in a candy store with no money. Look and smell but nothing to eat.

He is also principal investigator for the Department of Homeland Security, Science and Technology, Explosives Division; the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office, Nuclear and Radiological Imaging Platform; and Passive and x-ray Imaging Scanning Projects. He has also served on several National Academy of Sciences committees on aviation security and was the chair of the Committee on Airport Passenger Screening: Backscatter x-ray Machines. He is a member of the Physics Honor Society Sigma Pi Sigma.

Clinton M. Logan began his career at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in 1963 after receiving his BSME degree from Montana State University. In 1993, Clint won a US Department of Energy (DOE) grant to apply Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) resources to support Fischer Imaging Corporation in the design of their full-field digital mammography unit for cancer screening. Clint holds five US patents in accelerator and x-ray technology. He is a registered professional engineer in California, a member emeritus of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, and a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Daniel J. Schneberk received undergraduate degrees (one of them in mathematics) from the University of Oregon and a master’s in statistics from the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley). In 1988, Dan took an opportunity to join the nondestructive evaluation group at LLNL, collaborating with Harry Martz and initially working for Clint Logan on materials inspection and characterization issues in the x-Ray Laser Project. His work in NDE has continued to the present. He has received two LLNL Directors Performance Awards and awards from Ford and NASA. Dan is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

Peter J. Shull is an associate professor of engineering at Penn State Altoona. Dr. Shull has worked in the field of NDE for over 20 years while at the Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the Materials Reliability Division in Boulder, Colorado; at The Johns Hopkins University; and at The Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Shull’s primary research focus is NDE applied to process control. He has authored numerous publications, and is a member of the American Society of Nondestructive Testing, the American Society of Engineering Educators, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.

Having worked with hundreds of people in the polyamorous lifestyle it is refreshing to see a book that so articulately captures the experiences and patterns that I see repeatedly in my clinical practice. The fact that the book is also based on fifteen years of study makes it particularly impressive. A true view of a commonly misunderstood lifestyle

In writing The Polyamorists Next Door: Inside Multiple-Partner Relationships and Families, Elisabeth Sheff tackles a tough topic with objectivity, sensitivity, and grace. Sheff shows that polyamory is a positive family model. With personal experience and fifteen years of research, Sheff presents all aspects of polyamory through a deeply informed lens.

I like how Sheff addresses the more positive aspects as well as the less positive. It is incredibly important to understand fully any chosen way of life; whether that way of life is a religion, a diet, or a family model. Sheff discusses the difficulties of defining polyamory, and who practices polyamory. She writes about how adults view polyamory, how children within polyamorous families view polyamory, and how neighbors, schools, and Child Protective Services view polyamory.

I especially appreciate her insight into her own experiences with polyamory. It is not easy to transition into or out of a polyamorous relationship, and Sheff opens her life for the reader. This adds validity to her research. Without the personal stories, this would be little more than a long (well written) scholarly review journal article. The personal stories show me that this information is not just a theory rather, a true representation of the lifestyle.

While no book can be the definitive presentation (i.e.: the one to read while ignoring all others), I believe anyone researching polyamory should pick up this one. I find it true to life, authentic, and comprehensive.

A Polyamory Book for Monogamists

There is a lot of fascinating information in The Polyamorists Next Door, and many polyamorists will enjoy reading it to see the results of Dr. Sheff’s studies of polyamory. Poly parents will find interesting (and useful!) information in the sections on children raised in poly families.

However at the end of the day, this book isn’t written for us. Instead, it is the book polyamory has needed for decades. A book written not for people who want to be polyamorous, but for monogamists who want to understand polyamory. You know the question that pops up in every poly forum eventually “What book can I get for my (parents/friends/siblings/friends) to help them understand polyamory?”

The answer is: this one

Brace for Science-Speak
This is not a coffee table book. This is not light reading. This is a book written by a professional researcher. And it shows. Books like this take me so long to read because academics and researchers are really good at writing for other academics and researchers. Unfortunately, the writing style used in academics and research is not what the rest of us are used to. Complex sentences are the norm in this book. Reading it, there were many times when I had to stop and re-read a seemly simple sentence. “I know every word in this sentence, it is perfectly grammatical. Why can I not understand what she is saying?!”

I did, eventually, figure it out.

Let me clear say: this is not a criticism of Dr. Sheff’s writing. This is the norm for popular sciences books (as well as philosophy, and several other fascinating subjects). Some professions just seem to lead to a very complicated writing style. (Bill Bryson has written the only popular science book I could easily read–because he isn’t a scientist, he’s a journalist writing about science. See the difference?)

If you enjoy popular science books written by actual researchers you’ll find The Polyamorists Next Door right up your alley. If this style of writing is new to you, it may take you some time to adjust. Take it slow, and you’ll get through.

Well Worth the Read
This isn’t a book review blog, so I’m not going to give The Polyamorists Next Door any kind of star rating. I will say that it is a very valuable book that the poly community has needed for a long time. I think it is well worth picking up a copy. Read it, then add The Polyamorists Next Door to your personal lending library. Share with friends, family, and anyone else who is willing to learn more about polyamory.

This is an excellent book. This book isn't just for people who practice polyamory or are interested in polyamory, this book is just interesting for the sake of understanding alternative lifestyles. This book covers what seems like everything. From pros to cons, conflict resolution, even how it can effect the children involved in the household. I highly recommend this book to anyone who finds interest in alternative lifestyles. This is one of the most fascinating books I've read in quite some time.

Inclusion: A Very Practical Guide

Chris Boyle makes big claims in his introduction to the text. I've read many texts that claim to provide both a theoretical background and a practical approach to successful inclusion, so I was a little sceptical. I must say, though, that this is a great resource. The chapters, especially the one by Roger Slee, are engaging, and the third section on 'Overcoming barriers to successful inclusion' actually provides very clear and accessible practical information.

What works in inclusion: An ideal mix of theory and practice

From the outset, Boyle and Topping claim this book has `no rival publication' in the field of inclusive education. As an educator and research student working in this area I was cynical, however after reading the book I agree it has much to offer educators and researchers alike.
The first section focuses on theories of inclusive education and challenges the reader to think beyond what the term `inclusion' has come to mean. The chapters by Topping and Slee I found particularly interesting, with the concepts of social inclusion and human rights, and exclusion discussed respectively. The next section provides practical ideas for the implementation of inclusive practices, both at the classroom and whole school level. There are ideas that can be taken away and implemented immediately (such as the Student Log offered by Ashman), and others to be thought and talked about, before being developed into everyday classroom and school-wide practices (collaborative practices discussed by both Boyle and Deppeler). The final section acknowledges the challenges of inclusion faced everyday in our classrooms and schools, and provides some practical ideas to deal with the things we can control, such as differentiating the curriculum, and provides hope for those that we cannot.
The book concludes with a challenge for the reader to go away and `actually do something different'. The concepts and ideas discussed by the contributors left me with the desire and confidence to not only make some changes in my classroom and school practices, but to reflect upon and reconceptualise aspects of my understandings about inclusive education.
