The "Bible" of Architectural Programming
By A Customer
If you're interested in architectural programming--defining a project's requirements prior to designing--then this book is a "must read." Why "Problem Seeking?" Pena explains that since design is problem solving, programming is, "the search for sufficient information to clarify, to understand, to state the problem."
Part One of the book is a primer, focusing on theory and principles. Part Two is the "how to do it" section, providing details and examples. The book is based on decades of real-life project examples from one of the most experienced architectural programming teams in the nation.

The core idea is profound: Separating programming (analysis) from design (synthesis), brings tremendous clarity to the design problem. Focusing first on the goals, facts and concepts, then translating those into quantifiable needs (independent of the solution!) facilitates decision-making and encourages innovation.

Reading this book won't make you an architectural programmer, but it provides an essential foundation for anyone involved in a building project--architects and owners alike. The book is used as a text book in architecture schools across the country, and is required reading before taking the Architectural Registration Exam. A 9 out of 10 only because it will leave you yearning for more.

Every design student needs this
By Amazon Customer
This book was recommended to me by a practicing architect when I had nearly finished my architecture degree. I think all design students should read this first year. In the book, design is transformed from an arbitrary process into a calculated method of finding, then solving a problem. It embodies the very essence of programming.

Ideal Programming Reference
By Henry Louth
Problem seeking is a comprehensive and concise reference for the act of discovery prior to the act of design. Recommend even older editions over more recent programming publications. Great read, graphical examples, and future reference material for practicing designers and students alike.

Benign and Pathological Chromosomal Imbalances: Microscopic and Submicroscopic Copy Number Variations (CNVs) in Genetics and CounselingB

Benign & Pathological Chromosomal Imbalances systematically clarifies the disease implications of cytogenetically visible copy number variants (CG-CNV) using cytogenetic assessment of heterochromatic or euchromatic DNA variants. While variants of several megabasepair can be present in the human genome without clinical consequence, visually distinguishing these benign areas from disease implications does not always occur to practitioners accustomed to costly molecular profiling methods such as FISH, aCGH, and NGS.

As technology-driven approaches like FISH and aCGH have yet to achieve the promise of universal coverage or cost efficacy to sample investigated, deep chromosome analysis and molecular cytogenetics remains relevant for technology translation, study design, and therapeutic assessment.

Knowledge of the rare but recurrent rearrangements unfamiliar to practitioners saves time and money for molecular cytogeneticists and genetics counselors, helping to distinguish benign from harmful CG-CNV. It also supports them in deciding which molecular cytogenetics tools to deploy.

  • Shows how to define the inheritance and formation of cytogenetically visible copy number variations using cytogenetic and molecular approaches for genetic diagnostics, patient counseling, and treatment plan development
  • Uniquely classifies all known variants by chromosomal origin, saving time and money for researchers in reviewing benign and pathologic variants before costly molecular methods are used to investigate
  • Side-by-side comparison of copy number variants with their recently identified submicroscopic form, aiding technology assessment using aCGH and other techniques

Review

"This volume systematically clarifies the disease implications of cytogenetically visible copy number variants (CG-CNV) using cytogenetic assessment of heterochromatic or euchromatic DNA variants…deep chromosome analysis and molecular cytogenetics remains relevant for technology translation, study design, and therapeutic assessment."--Anticancer Research 34, 2014 "Liehr…surveys the current knowledge of variation in the human genome, including the increasing number of alterations that seem to have no phenotypic consequences ― a phenomenon once thought rare if not impossible. Focusing on cytogenetically visible copy number variants (CG-CNVs), he considers what the norm is, inheritance, formation, types, and their role on genetic diagnostics and counseling."--Reference & Research Book News, December 2013

Appropriate Review: Herobrine goes to school
By Kayla
Hi, I have a book blog called TheBestBookBlog(Ever) and I recently have started informing parents if certain book are okay for their kids.

Launguage: Four Stars (Just the usual "Brief Mild Language" thing.)

Easy-To-Read: Three Stars (A little hard, but by the time of eight or seven, your kid will reign triumphntly.)

Violence: Four And A Half Stars (There was this one time when Herobrine "pushed" Brett, the school bully.)

I would say 7-8 and up.

By Dawn V.
Another amazing book from Sharon Skinner! This book is the 2nd in the trilogy of Kira's saga and it is just as good as the first, "The Healer's Legacy", which is saying a lot! In searching for Kira's people on her mother's side, Kira, Milos, Vaith and Kelmir travel to the Isle of Eilar, which is a land very different from what they've seen before, inhabited by people with unique abilities. It is such a great story and its going to be so very difficult waiting for the 3rd book to come out.

I have read several of Sharon's books and am a devout fan! The stories that she tells can be enjoyed by both younger and older fans, alike. Sharon creates characters that have depth and weaves their stories in such a descriptive way that you are right there, seeing their stories unfold, and feeling their emotions. I find myself torn between needing to know what happens next while at the same time, not wanting the book to end! Thank you Sharon for another great adventure!

Yet another page turner from Sharon Skinner.
By Birbitt
The second book of the series was just as fantastically well written as the first. Mrs. Skinner has a special gift for writing characters that are so easy to get attached to, while at the same time giving us at least one that we love to hate. This book begins where the last book left off, and leaves you wanting more! I excitedly wait for the third and final installment of Kira's story. If you haven't yet read The Healer's Legacy I highly suggest you start there.

From the sadness of death springs hope and purpose in life
By Lloyd Sakazaki
John Steinbeck's The Red Pony is a deceptively simple "young reader's" book that blossoms into full life meaning when examined as an artfully presented novella. The brief 100-page work reads like a four-paneled painting which, viewed from the proper perspective, should be appreciated for what it truly is--a remarkable rendition of realism in 20th century American literature.

What to expect from the book: Expect four loosely connected short stories or vignettes, not a tightly woven epic plot. Expect crisp, articulate prose, without the extravagant detail, depth of characterization and flowing drama afforded by a longer work. Expect to experience thought-provoking, coming-of-age events in a young Salinas ranch boy's life, not the entertaining action of a Hollywood thriller. Also, expect to have to dig a little to understand the author's message, not to be spoonfed the theme of this unique work.

Here's my view of the thematic "glue" holding the individual stories together:

1. Boy learns about death: In "The Gift," 10-year old Jody learns through the sudden sickness, suffering and gruesome, buzzard-pecked death of his beloved red pony, Gabilan, that even "happy" gifts can result in sadness and loss, despite the best efforts of well-intentioned adults.

2. Boy views consequences of the ways of man: In "The Great Mountains," Jody sees how compassion has its economic and cultural limitations, when father refuses to honor the old paisano, Gitano's, request to live out his remaining years on the ranch where he was born. Consequence: Gitano disappears into the lonesome mountains towards the west, riding father's decrepit horse and ominously carrying only a sharp-bladed rapier.

3. Through loss comes hope: Against a gloomy backdrop of loss, "The Promise" builds hope but culminates in the harsh choice between life of birthing mare and her breech-positioned colt. The bittersweet outcome, death of the mare to save her colt, is difficult to accept but does offer at least a glimmer of optimism.

4. Despite life's trials and tribulations, its fullness arises from having a sense of purpose: The final story, "The Leader of the People," mentions neither the loss of Jody's red pony nor his presumed raising of the newborn colt. Instead, the connection to the other stories and unifying message of the novella can be found, in my opinion, within the final, almost trivial event: "Grandfather was about to refuse, and then he saw Jody's face," which led him to accept Jody's offer to make him a glass of lemonade. Importantly, through the simple act of accepting Jody's offer, Grandfather nourishes the boy's sense of purpose. Although Grandfather's own life purpose has withered since that unforgettable year decades ago when he led a group of settlers out west, the boy's life lies ahead with plenty of potential for a purposeful future.

In sum, out of death, and love, springs life's potential: When life has a purpose, however big or small--from caring for a pony to returning to one's birthplace to die, from being a leader of the people to making lemonade for a loved one--we not only live but thrive. The Red Pony is a sensitive affirmation of life--recommended reading for anyone willing to experience a little darkness before seeing light.

BOOK ONE

A Guided Drift Toward War

Overture: Themes, Issues, Recapitulations

"We are facing difficult days in this country, but I think you will find me in the future just the same Franklin Roosevelt you have known a great many years."

Roosevelt had spoken these words at midnight of the night before (it was now Wednesday morning, November 6, 1940) to a jubilant crowd of Hyde Park neighbors gathered on the wide Big House lawn—a crowd that had come in torchlight parade to celebrate with him his election to an unprecedented third term as President of the United States, defeating Republican challenger Wendell Willkie—and the promise thus made, despite being rendered strangely tentative and even dubious by the prefatory "I think," was evidently intended by him to soothe, to reassure. It failed to do so, however, for everyone who listened to it or read it in the papers. There were critical and well-informed minds in which the promise raised questions of identity that, viewed in terms of the future now rising as black clouds out of Europe, out of Asia, to cast gloom over the Republic,
were both difficult to answer and profoundly disturbing.

Was this "Franklin Roosevelt" whom his listeners had "known a great many years" actually and wholly the Roosevelt upon whom now depended so much of the fate of America and, indeed, the world? Or was the "real" Franklin Roosevelt a man different in important ways, and perhaps contradictory ways, from his Hyde Park friends' perception of him? In either case, but especially in the latter, to what extent and in what ways would his remaining "just the same" be a boon for mankind, to what extent and in what ways a misfortune, in the "difficult days" to come?

II

The man popularly perceived, the man whose face at midnight had been cooled by a mild springlike breeze as it was imbued by ruddy torchlight, was a big, warm, friendly, compassionate man with an acute sense of justice and a strong commitment to it. Through all the fifty-seven years
of his life (he would be fifty-eight this coming January 30) he had been a lover of simple country living. He disliked cities, though his most solid political support came from urban areas, and had in the past, in public speech, more than hinted a belief that virtue, discouraged by the frenetic
artificiality of crowded streets, could come to its full flowering only amid green growing things in such landscapes as the one he saw this morning out his bedroom window. For though the green growth was now in autumn retreat at Hyde Park, the hardwoods leafless, the evergreens nearly
black, the fields and meadows gray and brown and swept by chill winds under a darkly lowering sky (the weather, he noted, had greatly changed since midnight)—though this was so, and though the present melancholy of it was felt, the window-framed landscape of wide fields and wild-wooded
hills was yet seen through memory's eyes as a greenly living one. Through it, nourishing and ordering it, flowed the great theme-river of his life, the mighty Hudson, upon whose wide bosom he had spent many of his happiest youthful hours in sailboat and iceboat and from whose bank he and his devoted friend Louis Howe had launched the model sailboats they designed and built together during his long convalescence, as a middle-aged man, from near fatal illness. It now presented itself to his vision, beyond a fringe of treetop, as more lake than stream. A small inland sea. And it
was in fact both an active arm of the sea and an active contributor of water to the sea, for it was one of the longest estuaries on earth, as Roosevelt had learned as a boy. Already, as it made its slow curve around Crum Elbow, it sometimes tasted faintly of the salt of the sea that flowed into it, if meagerly, at high tide, and into which soon it must die. Such facts greatly interested, and were known to interest, the man whom his neighbors had long known. He collected them avidly and, his admiring neighbors would have said, they now richly furnished a mind remarkable for
its capacity.

Many of these neighbors knew, as we know, that his collecting of facts, like his collecting of stamps, old books, naval prints, and the like, had been a major part of the psychological strategy he had employed, to sustain his morale, in the long hard war he had waged—much of it in this house, in this very room—against the crippling effects of the polio that had struck him down in 1921, when he was thirty-nine. It was a war he had declared in the innermost recesses of his being, and to everyone around him, while he was yet wholly bedridden, unable even to sit erect. With an iron determination whose grimness he masked with smiling outward confidence, even gaiety, he had set out to conquer and destroy his affliction. He would walk again! He would walk unaided, without leg braces or crutches or canes! Alas, he never did. He became more mobile, less helpless physically, than had seemed possible to his doctors at the outset of his war, but no amount of willpower or arduous physical effort (he expended prodigious quantities of both) could regrow destroyed nerve tissue. In 1928, when his return to active political life forced him to suspend his recovery regimen after seven years of harsh effort, his legs yet remained nearly fleshless, hardly more than sticks of bone draped in wrinkled skin, and were almost totally unresponsive to his will. His public "walking" and "standing," in 1928 as in 1940, were difficult and often painful balancing acts on what were in effect stilts (steel rods locked around hips, knees, ankles), possible only if he leaned heavily on canes or had beside him a strong man whose arm he could grip. Nevertheless, his struggle had been far from fruitless. During it, as his neighbors knew, he had manifest and further developed an almost incredible fortitude, patience, and emotional self-control—a self-mastery that was part and parcel of his mastery of other people.

Discerned by some of the more acute of those who observed him with close attention, though from a distance, was the fact that his very disability had become in his way of handling it a source, an instrument, a protector and preserver of personal power. As regards this last, it prevented risk-engendering importunities that he could not have avoided, save at the further and possibly greater political risk of giving offense, had he been able to move freely about and therefore compelled to mingle casually with other people on occasions and grounds not of his choosing. The compulsion was now all the other way: people must come to him, and they must come always, to some extent, at least, with formality—that is, in accordance with formal rules whereby they were placed at an initial disadvantage insofar as their dealings with him were of an adversarial nature. This was true even in situations where his actual need for their support was considerably greater than theirs for his. For since they came as invited guests into his house, or by his permission into his office or onto other ground ruled by him, they came perforce under felt obligations and must
assume in some degree, willy-nilly, a supplicatory attitude. By the manner of his welcome or greeting he could and did set the tone of every personal encounter and, having done so, could and did dominate the discussion.

Similar in effect, but different psychologically, was the way in which his physical handicap became per se a source and instrument of governing power. Conjoined or (more precisely) fused with the self-mastery he had gained through his struggle to overcome it, his perceived handicap, in part by weakening in other people their inward resistance to his will, actually increased his persuasiveness and enhanced his ability to command through sheer force of personality. It commonly made these others want at the outset to please, emulate, and, if at all possible, agree with this man who demonstrated so much courage, strength of character, and optimistic confidence—so much liking and concern for them personally, such sweetness of disposition—under pressures that would have crushed an ordinary mortal into chronic depression and resentful dependency. Moreover there was a natural assumption on the part of people in general, an assumption abundantly encouraged by his careful management of his public image, that he had earned through his prolonged and terrible ordeal a compassionate living wisdom remarkable for its width and depth. He was therefore commonly deemed more likely to be right than his opponents were on issues concerning which the common view was not well informed. He might be so even on issues of which his own factual knowledge was meager: his "intuition" was famous, was encouraged by him so to be—an ability, as it seemed, to dispense with logical process as he plunged with lightning swiftness into the heart of a difficult problem and discovered there its solution—and though it was presumed that he had been born with this uncanny ability, it was further presumed that prolonged anguish and arduous struggle had sharpened and strengthened it.

Davis lacks focus
By D. M. Nott
Let me start by saying that Kenneth S. Davis is a naturally talented writer and historian and this biography is very informative and entertaining. However it is simply too bloated, it does not just want to be a biography of FDR but a history of the aristocratic Hudson River society, Groton, Harvard, Tammany Hall and the Woodrow Wilson administration. I am a firm believer in a model of biography that puts the subject in their historical context, since no person can be understood without looking at the kind of envirnoment that formed their actions.
However Davis simply takes this too far by focusing on these particular aspects of the biography without really any explanation of why this is essential to understanding the character of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Davis is also to fixated on Eleanor and parts of the biography ignore his role in their relationship and focus on her life.
Overall this is a well written, compelling biography but it is simply too long and there are parts where the man himself gets lost in the world surrounding him. The fact that this volume is 853 pages and only gets as far as his election as the governor of New York shows how overblown the book is. Overall more editing was required to make this volume flow better and to give us a sense of Rooselvelt himself, this is a shame since this biography has so much more going for it.

How it all began...
By M. A Newman
This book was awarded a well-deserved Parkman for the quality of its scholarship. This is the best book on the early years of FDR. It follows his childhood and explores the relationships with the key people in his life: the formidable Sara Delano Roosevelt, his marriage to Eleanor, and his political education from Louis Howe.
This book also has a great deal to say about polio and how FDR and each of these people responded. This is not "Sunrise at Campabello, although it is clear that polio did make Roosevelt into the person who was able to become the greatest president of the 20th century.

Huge biography that reads at the pace of a great novel.

I can't wait to read the other books in this serial biography. Davis rarely overtells or undertells details of FDR's early years. The book moves quickly, and leaves an insatiable desire to read the next installation - if you can find it.

The Angel: The Egyptian Spy Who Saved Israel, by Uri Bar-Joseph

A gripping feat of reportage that exposes—for the first time in English—the sensational life and mysterious death of Ashraf Marwan, an Egyptian senior official who spied for Israel, offering new insight into the turbulent modern history of the Middle East.

As the son-in-law of Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser and a close advisor to his successor, Anwar Sadat, Ashraf Marwan had access to the deepest secrets of the country’s government. But Marwan himself had a secret: He was a spy for the Mossad, Israel’s intelligence service. Under the codename “The Angel,” Marwan turned Egypt into an open book for the Israeli intelligence services—and, by alerting the Mossad in advance of the joint Egyptian-Syrian attack on Yom Kippur, saved Israel from a devastating defeat.

Drawing on meticulous research and interviews with many key participants, Uri Bar Joseph pieces together Marwan’s story. In the process, he sheds new light on this volatile time in modern Egyptian and Middle Eastern history, culminating in 2011’s Arab Spring. The Angel also chronicles the discord within the Israeli government that brought down Prime Minister Golda Meir.

However, this nail-biting narrative doesn’t end with Israel’s victory in the Yom Kippur War. Marwan eluded Egypt’s ruthless secret services for many years, but then somebody talked. Five years later, in 2007, his body was found in the garden of his London apartment building. Police suspected he had been thrown from his fifth-floor balcony, and thanks to explosive new evidence, Bar-Joseph can finally reveal who, how, and why.

From the Back Cover

A riveting feat of research and reportage, The Angel explores one of the twentieth century’s most compelling spy stories: the sensational life and suspicious death of Ashraf Marwan, a top-level Egyptian official who secretly worked for Israel’s Mossad.

As the son-in-law of Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser and a close adviser to his successor, Anwar Sadat, Ashraf Marwan had access to the deepest secrets of his country’s government. But Marwan had a secret of his own: He was a spy for the Mossad, Israel’s renowned intelligence service. Known to his handlers as “the Angel,” Marwan turned Egypt into an open book and saved Israel from a devastating defeat by tipping off the Mossad in advance of the joint Egyptian-Syrian attack on Yom Kippur in 1973.

Remarkably, Marwan eluded Egypt’s ruthless secret police for decades. In later years he enjoyed a luxurious life—but that would come to an abrupt end in 2007, when his body was found in a bed of roses in the garden below his apartment building in London. Police suspected he had been thrown from his balcony on the fifth floor, but the case has remained unsolved. Until now.

After Marwan died, details of his shadowy life were slowly revealed. Drawing on meticulous research and exclusive interviews with key figures involved, The Angel is the first book to discuss Marwan’s motives, how his identity as a Mossad spy was deliberately exposed by none other than the former chief of Israel’s Military Intelligence, and how the information he provided was used—and misused. Expanding on this focus, it sheds new light on the modern history of the Middle East and the crucial role of human espionage in shaping the fate of nations. And, for the first time, it answers the questions haunting Marwan’s legacy: In the end, whom did Ashraf Marwan really betray? And who killed him?

When reality beats fiction....a must read
By Roni Hefetz
The Angel: The Egyptian Spy Who Saved Israel....

The Angel is a remarkable book -- the result of deep research into one of the most fascinating spy stories ever....reads like a thriller. Bar Joseph story telling ability - extracted from interviews and documents - is outstanding. As someone who actually participated in the Yom Kippur war, I could not stop reading. Many lessons to be learnt from both historical accounts as well as human nature so skilfully analysed and described. This is a must read whether you like history, thrillers, intelligence, spy stories or even if you are looking for a fascinating read while on the beach.

The chilling tale of a remarkable episode in Israeli history
By Mal Warwick
The history of the state of Israel is one of continuous war punctuated by intermittent stretches of peace. The open military conflicts the young nation has experienced have always threatened its continuing existence, but none more so than the Yom Kippur War in 1973. Never before and never since has Israel come closer to annihilation.

In The Angel: The Egyptian Spy Who Saved Israel, the Israeli political scientist Uri Bar-Joseph tells the little-known tale of Ashraf Marwan. This son-in-law of President Gamal Abdel Nasser and close adviser to his successor, Anwar Sadat, was also a spy for the Mossad. Marwan’s reports to his handler enabled the Israeli Defense Force to recover from the surprise of the initial Egyptian and Syrian attack and soon turn the tide.

A remarkable episode in Israeli history

Marwan’s story is astonishing. As a supremely ambitious young man, he married Nasser’s daughter. Marwan made the mistake of misjudging his father-in-law. When the puritanical president learned that Marwan was using his position to enrich himself, he cast the young man adrift. Bar-Joseph speculates that Marwan’s desire to exert revenge on Nasser led him to offer himself as an informant for the Mossad.

The making of an Egyptian spy

Nasser died in 1970 when Marwan was just 26 years of age. He cleverly maneuvered himself into the good graces of Anwar Sadat by undermining the Nasserite faction during the confusion when the country’s new leadership was in question. In short order, Marwan became Sadat’s personal representative to other Middle Eastern leaders, including King Faisal of Saudi Arabia and President Moammar Gaddhafi of Libya. These connections, and his closeness to Sadat, enabled him to amass a large personal fortune while reporting to the Israelis on a regular basis.

Doubts about Marwan’s authenticity

Marwan’s reports in the early 1970s frequently reached the desk of Prime Minister Golda Meir. But he was not universally regarded as reliable within the Israeli intelligence community. In fact, for the rest of his life there were those in the Israeli military intelligence leadership who maintained that Marwan was a double agent, placed to mislead Israel at important junctures. It was this skepticism that led several key Israeli leaders to disregard several of Marwan’s early warnings of the impending Egyptian-Syrian attack. Only on the day of the attack itself was his last, desperate message heeded at the highest levels. Though it came only hours before the Egyptians crossed the Suez Canal, the warning time was sufficient for the IDF to avoid catastrophe.

Espionage and egotism

Bar-Joseph explains at great length how distrust of Marwan came to be so widespread not just in the Israeli government and military but among the public as well. The head of military intelligence when the Yom Kippur War broke out had rejected Marwan’s report of the imminent attack—and for decades afterward he insisted in press interviews and in a widely read book that Marwan was a double agent. Bar-Joseph details the evidence refuting the double agent hypothesis and makes clear that Marwan’s chief critic was motivated by a desire to avoid blame for his failure to act on the warnings he received. Little wonder, since his stubborn refusal to accept reality was one of the most shameful acts in Israeli history.

About the author

Uri Bar-Joseph is an Israeli political scientist who has written the definitive book on the intelligence failures that caused his country to come close to losing the Yom Kippur War. The Angel focuses on the role of the intelligence establishment’s relationship with the spy whose reports were decisive in enabling an Israeli victory.

A surprising and entertaining account (with some major caveats)
By All the Names
This is a remarkable and truly surprising account of espionage. It also sheds light on the intertwined psychological and political aspects of the Arab-Israeli conflict, especially in the 1970s. It is written in an accessible journalistic style, which makes it entertaining too (especially the earlier chapters), if replete with clichés. The author, Bar-Joseph, makes a compelling case about the mystifying career of Ashraf Marwan. Still, the reader should not let his or her guard down because there are three serious weaknesses that the quick reader might miss.

First, the author's main contribution is that he gained access *for a limited time* to the still classified materials passed on by "The Angel" to the Mossad. He (the author) explicitly states that he is recounting and interpreting this information to the best of his ability. Believable but since he is unable to revisit the materials, and given that the materials are also off-limits to other researchers (including the author himself), this means that no one is able to verify this account of events. The author is not at fault here but this remains a serious weakness in the book and one that is unavoidable in telling a story like this one.

Second, the core of the book is "The Angel's" career as a spy for the Mossad. This could've made an excellent long essay. To turn it into a book, the author needed a lot of padding. Some of the padding is informative, and shows the author's knowledge of the inner fighting between Israel's intelligence agencies and the surreal rivalries among Arab leaders. But some of it is also superfluous and relies on dubious journalistic reports and online sources (e.g. blogs) written decades after the fact and clearly unsubstantiated. This padding allows for the book to cover "The Angel's" entire life and not only his years as a spy. The final product then is a mix of surprising secrets (highly plausible but ultimately unverifiable) and juicy anecdotes from the world of espionage (possible but more importantly entertaining). In other words, the author made a clear choice to write an entertaining commercial book about espionage and was willing to pay the price in terms of padding and reliability of sources.

Third, the author frequently relied on lazy stereotypes to explain the motivations of key players. For example: the head of the Mossad appears so tormented by the thought that he may have been able to save "The Angel" from assassination. The author gets so carried away highlighting the suffering and guilt of the head of the Mossad that an inattentive reader may lose sight of that person's main professional objective: helping lead more effective wars, i.e. getting scores of people killed. The author is blinded by his belief in the humanity of the Mossad that he expresses surprise that "The Angel", who in addition to being a spy, was also an arms dealer and corrupt businessman, was worried about his safety! And, instead of emphasizing the deadly entanglement that "The Angel" got himself into, the author is sidetracked by outdated and often fictitious prejudices about that the difference between Western/Israeli obsession with guilt and Arab obsession with shame. But in the end, the author tells us that "The Angel" was killed because the Israeli intelligence revealed his identity. This is a striking example of the well-known "shoot-and-cry" ethos characteristic of many apologia for Israel. Ultimately, this weakness does not alter the book's main findings about the identity and activities of "The Angel" but it impedes the author's ability to keep an open mind when explaining "The Angel's" motivations.

Finally (probably a minor point), the editors did a poor job with transliterating non-English terms.
