This book and its accompanying CD-ROM are the result of almost 10 years of work that originated from, and was guided by, the premise that signal processing is the best starting point for the study of both electrical engineering and computer engineering. In the summer of 1993, two of us (J. H. McC and R. W. S) began to develop a one-quarter course that was to become the first course for Georgia Tech computer engineering students, who were at that time following an overlapping, but separate, curriculum track from the electrical engineering students in the School of ECE. We argued that the subject of digital signal processing (DSP) had everything we wanted in a first course for computer engineers: it introduced the students to the use of mathematics as a language for thinking about engineering problems; it laid useful groundwork for subsequent courses; it made a strong connection to digital computation as a means for implementing systems; and it offered the possibility of interesting applications to motivate beginning engineers to do the hard work of connecting mathematics and computation to problem solving.

We were not the first to have this idea. In particular, two books by Professor Ken Steiglitz of Princeton University had a major impact on our thinking. The major reasons that it was feasible in 1993 to experiment with what came to be known at Georgia Tech as the "DSP First" approach were: (1) the easy accessibility of increasingly powerful personal computers and (2) the availability of MATLAB, a powerful and easy-to-use software environment for numerical computation. Indeed, Steiglitz's 1972 book was well ahead of its time, since DSP had few practical applications, and even simple simulations on then-available batch processing computers required significant programming effort. By the early 1990s, however, DSP applications such as CD audio, high-speed modems, and cell phones were widespread due to the availability of lowcost "DSP chips" that could perform extensive computation in "real time:" Thus, integrated circuit technology was the driving force that simultaneously provided the wherewithal both for a convenient PC-based laboratory experience for learning DSP and for creating a climate of applications that provided motivation for that study.

From the beginning, we believed that "hands-on" experience with real signals was crucial. This is provided by a "laboratory" based on MATLAB running on PCs. In the laboratory assignments, students gain direct reinforcement from hearing and seeing the effects of filtering operations that they have implemented on sound and image signals. They synthesize music from sinusoids, and they see that those same sinusoids are the basis for the data modems that they use routinely to access the Internet. We also found that MATLAB made it possible to quickly develop demonstration programs for visualizing and clarifying complicated mathematical concepts. By 1995, we had written notes covering the topics in our course, and we had amassed a large amount of computer-based supporting material. Mark Yoder, while on sabbatical leave from Rose-Hulman, had the idea to put all of this material in a form that other teachers (and students) could access easily. That idea led to a CDROM that captured the entire contents of our course web site. It included demonstrations and animations used in classes, laboratory assignments, and solved homework problems. As teachers, this material has changed the way we present ideas, because it offers new ways to visualize a concept "beyond the equations:" Over the years, our web site has continued to grow. We anticipate that this growth will continue, and that users of this material will see new ideas take shape in the form of additional demos and labs. In 1998, all of this material was packaged together in a textbook/CD-ROM, and we gave it the descriptive title DSP First: A Multimedia Approach.

No sooner had we finished DSP First, then Georgia Tech switched from a quarterly system to semesters, and our expanded course became "Signal Processing First," the first course for computer engineers and electrical engineers. However, we found ourselves with a textbook that only covered two-thirds of the material that we needed to include for the semester-long, required signals and systems core course in our semester curriculum. 2 This led to another four years of development that included four new chapters on continuous-time signal processing and the Fourier transform; many new laboratory assignments in areas such as filtering, Fourier series, and analog and digital communications; many new demos and visualizations; hundreds of new homework problems and solutions; and updates of many of our original computer demos.

The present text is our effort to implement an expanded version of our basic philosophy. It is a conventional book, although, as our title Signal Processing First suggests, the distinguishing feature of the text (and the accompanying CD-ROM) is that it presents signal processing at a level consistent with an introductory ECE course, i.e., the sophomore level in a typical U.S. university. The list of topics in the book is not surprising, but since we must combine signal processing concepts with some introductory ideas, the progression of topics may strike some teachers as unconventional. Part of the reason for this is that in the electrical engineering curriculum, signals and systems and DSP typically have been treated as junior- and senior-level courses, for which a traditional background of linear circuits and linear systems is assumed. We continue to believe strongly that there are compelling reasons for turning this order around, since the early study of signal processing affords a perfect opportunity to show electrical and computer engineering students that mathematics and digital computation can be the key to understanding familiar engineering applications. Furthermore, this approach makes the subject much more accessible to students in other majors such as computer science and other engineering fields. This point is increasingly important because nonspecialists are beginning to use DSP techniques routinely in many areas of science and technology.

Signal Processing First is organized to move from simple continuous-time sinusoidal signals, to discrete-time signals and systems, then back to continuous-time, and finally, the discrete and continuous are mixed together as they often are in real engineering systems. A look at the table of contents shows that the book begins very simply (Chapter 2) with a detailed discussion of continuous-time sinusoidal signals and their representation by complex exponentials. This is a topic traditionally introduced in a linear circuits course. We then proceed to introduce the spectrum concept (Chapter 3) by considering sums of sinusoidal signals with a brief introduction to Fourier series. At this point we make the transition to discrete-time signals by considering sampled sinusoidal signals (Chapter 4). This allows us to introduce the important issues in sampling without the additional complexity of Fourier transforms. Up to this point in the text, we have only relied on the simple mathematics of sine and cosine functions. The basic linear system concepts are then introduced with simple FIR filters (Chapter 5). The key concept of frequency response is derived and interpreted for FIR filters (Chapter 6), and then we introduce z-transforms (Chapter 7) and IIR systems (Chapter 8). The first eight chapters are very similar to the those of DSP First. At this point, we return to continuous-time signals and systems with the introduction of convolution integrals (Chapter 9) and then frequency response for continuous-time systems (Chapter 10). This leads naturally to a discussion of the Fourier transform as a general representation of continuous-time signals (Chapter 11). The last two chapters of the book cap off the text with discussions of applications of the concepts discussed in the early chapters. At this stage, a student who has faithfully read the text, worked homework problems, and done the laboratory assignments related to the early chapters will be rewarded with the ability to understand applications involving linear filtering, amplitude modulation, the sampling theorem and discrete-time filtering, and spectrum analysis.

At Georgia Tech, our sophomore-level, 15-week course covers most of the content of Chapters 2-12 in a format involving two one-hour lectures, one' 1.5 hour recitation, and one 1.5 hour laboratory period per week. As mentioned previously, we place considerable emphasis on the lab because we believe that it is essential for motivating our students to learn the mathematics of signal processing, and because it introduces our students to the use of powerful software in engineering analysis and design. At Rose-Hulman, we use Signal Processing First in a junior-level, 10-week course that covers Chapters 4-13. The Rose format is four one-hour lectures per week. The students use MATLAB throughout the course, but do not have a separate laboratory period.

As can be seen from the previous discussion, Signal Processing First is not a conventional signals and systems book. One difference is the inclusion of a significant amount of material on sinusoids and complex phasor representations. In a traditional electrical engineering curriculum, these basic notions are covered under the umbrella of linear circuits taken before studying signals and systems. Indeed, our choice of title for this book and its ancestor is designed to emphasize this departure from tradition. An important point is that teaching signal processing first also opens up new approaches to teaching linear circuits, since there is much to build upon that will allow redirected emphasis in the circuits course. At Georgia Tech, we use the fact that students have already seen phasors and sinusoidal steady-state response to move more quickly from resistive circuits to AC circuits. Furthermore, students have also seen the important concepts of frequency response and poles and zeros before studying linear circuits. This allows more emphasis on circuits as linear systems. For example, the Laplace transform is used in the circuits course as a tool for solving the particular systems problems associated with linear circuits. This has resulted in a new textbook with accompanying CD-ROM co-authored by Professors Russell Mersereau and Joel Jackson.

A second difference from conventional signals and systems texts is that Signal Processing First emphasizes topics that rely on "frequency domain" concepts. This means that topics like Laplace transforms, state space, and feedback control, are absent. At Georgia Tech, these topics are covered in the required linear circuits course and in a junior-level "tier two" course on control systems. Although our text has clearly been shaped by a specific point of view, this does not mean that it and the associated CD-ROM can only be used in the way that they are used at Georgia Tech. For example, at Rose-Hulman the material on sinusoids and phasors is skipped in a junior-level course because students have already had this material in a circuits course. This allows us to cover the latter part of the text in one quarter. Indeed, by appropriate selection of topics, our text can be used for either a one-quarter or one-semester signals and systems course that emphasizes communications and signal processing applications from the frequency domain point of view. For most electrical engineering curricula, the control-oriented topics would have to be covered elsewhere. In other curricula, such as computer science and computer engineering, Signal Processing First emphasizes those topics that are most relevant to multimedia computing, and the control-oriented topics are generally not a required part of the curriculum. This is also likely to be true in other engineering fields where data acquisition and frequency domain analysis is assuming a prominent role in engineering analysis and design.

The CD-ROM that accompanies the present text contains all of the material that we currently use in teaching our one-semester first course for sophomore electrical and computer engineering students. This type of material has become a common supplement for lecturing in an age where "computers in education" is the buzz word. These new forms of computer-Leased media provide powerful ways to express ideas that motivate our students in their engineering education. As authors, we continue to experiment with different modes of presentation, such as the narrations and movies on the accompanying CD-ROM, along with the huge archive of solved problems. In the original DSP First CDROM we noticed that finding material was a challenge, so we have provided a search engine on this CD-ROM in order to make is easy to find relevant material from keywords searches. Now, for example, if you want to know why firfilt.m is in the SP-First Toolbox, you can just search for firfilt.m and see all the labs and homework that use it.

This text and its associated CD-ROM represents an untold amount of work by the three authors and many students and colleagues. Fortunately, we have been able to motivate a number of extremely talented students to contribute to this project. Of the many participants, five students who served as award-winning teaching assistants over many terms provided essential material to the CD-ROM. Jeff Schodorf developed the original abasing and reconstruction demos for Chapter 4, and did much of the early organization of all the DSP First CD-ROM demos along with Mark Yoder. David Anderson apprenticed with Jeff and then took over the course as its primary TA. David contributed new labs and redesigned the DSP First lab format so that the CD-ROM version would be easy to use. Jordan Rosenthal developed a consistent way to write GUIs that has now been used in all of our demonstrations. Many other students have benefited from his extraordinary MATLAB expertise. Greg Krudysz wrote the CON2DIS demo and has now taken over the primary role in developing GUIs.

In addition, many undergraduates have implemented MATLAB programs, graphical user interfaces (GUIs), and demos that are an important part of this CD-ROM. Most notably, Craig Ulmer developed PeZ as a multiyear undergraduate research project and contributed some of the other GUIs used in the labs. Koon Kong overhauled PeZ for later versions of MATLAB. Joseph Stanley made our first movie, the tuning fork movie. Amer Abufadel developed the image filtering demo for Chapter 6. Emily Eaton wrote the Music GUI and provided many of the musical scores and piano performances needed for the songs in the labs. Rajbabu Velmurugan improved the Music GUI and provided last minute updates for all the GUIs labs. Janak Patel wrote most of help files for the GUIs. Greg Slabaugh wrote the Fourier series demo as a JAVA applet, and Mustayeen Nayeem converted it into the MATLAB Fourier series demo. Budyanto Junus wrote the first LTI demo. Mehdi Javaramand developed parts of the Phasor Races GUI. Sam Li has participated in the development of many parts of the labs. He, Arthur Hinson, and Ghassan AI-Regib also developed many questions for the pre-labs and warm-ups in the labs. Kathy Harrington created lists of keywords for searching homework problems and edited an extensive set of frequently asked questions for the labs. Bob Paterno recorded a large number of tutorial movies about MATLAB.

During the past few years many professors have participated in the sophomore course ECE-2025 at Georgia Tech as lecturers and recitation instructors. Many of them have also written problem solutions that are included on this CD-ROM. We an indebted to the following for permitting us to include their solutions: Randy Abler, Yucel Altunbasak, John Bordelon, Giorgio Casinovi, Russ Callen, Kate Cummings, Richard Dansereau, Steve DeWeerth, Michael Fan, Bruno Frazier, Faramarz Fekri, Elias Glytsis, Monty Hayes, Bonnie Heck, Mary Ann Ingram, Paul Hasler, Chuanyi Ji, Aaron Lanterman, Russell Mersereau, Geofferey Li, Steve McLaughlin, Mohamed Moad, Bill Sayle, Mark Smith, Whit Smith, David Taylor, Erik Verriest, Doug Williams, Tony Yezzi, and Tong Zhou.

We are also indebted to Wayne Padgett and Bruce Black, who have taught ECE-280 at Rose-Hulman and have contributed many good ideas.

We also want to acknowledge the contributions or our Publisher, Tom Robbins at Pearson Prentice Hall. Very early on, he bought into the concept of DSP First and supported and encouraged us at every step in that project and its continuation. He also arranged for reviews of the text and the CD-ROM by some very thoughtful and careful reviewers, including Filson Glantz, S. Hossein Mousavinezhad, Geoffrey Orsak, Mitch Wilkes, Robert Strum, James Kaiser, Victor DeBrunner, Timothy Schultz, and Anna Baraniecki.

Finally, we want to recognize the understanding and support of our wives (Carolyn McClellan, Dorothy Schafer, and Sarah Yoder). Carolyn's photo of the cat Percy appears on the cover after undergoing some DSP. They have patiently supported us as this seemingly never-ending project continued to consume energy and time. Indeed, this project will continue on beyond the present text and CD-ROM since there are just too many ideas yet to explore. That is the appeal of the computer-based and Web-based approach. It can easily grow to incorporate the innovative visualizations and experiments that others will provide.

Outstanding!
By rohshall
I have been using this book for my master's course and this is the first time I have understood DSP. And it feels great to finally have grasped the fundamentals of the subject that has long evaded me. The treatment in this book is very unique and novel. And the mathematics is used as a tool to help understanding the concepts and not given in the form of pages of proofs in which the reader can get lost. I salute authors for coming out with such an original and easy-to-understand approach to the subject.
Highly recommended!

Needs Improvement
By Erik Christensen
I'm not sure who wrote the positive reviews here, but I can tell you as a student using this book that it is among the worst I've ever been stuck with and most of my classmates seem to agree.

The concepts are made much more difficult than they should be by poor writing. The authors jump around constantly, use new terminology at times before introducing it, and provide examples that are inadequate in helping to solve the problems at the end of the chapter. Stylistically, the writing is very bland and sure to put you to sleep. The first sentence of the book is "This is a book about signals and systems."

Sure, this book may cover all of the core concepts involved in signal processing, but trying to make sense of it when you don't already have a background in the subject is quite a challenge. After reading the chapters, we were unable to solve most of the problems in the book until the answers were given to us. I've dealt with bad textbooks before, but this one tops them all. Needless to say, it was a very frustrating experience and I can't say I recommend this book.

A great concept builder on learning the DSP as the first class
By Winters Admire
This book is a must-read for EE or SW Engr students as a concept builder on learning the DSP as the first class. The homework assignments build the path for learning the DSP step-by-step. In chapter 4, Sampling and Aliasing, paves the way to understand the FIR and IIR using the z-Transform--especially some homework problems in chapter 6, 7 and 8, are brain-storm types, which depict a cascade connection of two or three LTI systems, with the inputs in time-domain, the students need to solve them in frequency-domain by applying the sampling techniques learned in chapter 4, from C-to-D using the Laplace Transform, then finding the frequency response in H(z) and convert them to D-to-C forms, in which the FIR circuits have one pole while the IIR have multiple poles. That's all I learned from this great textbook. I think that the update version (release in 2014?) would be my favorite one too.

Insightful, Inspiring & Entertaining!
By Chet Davenport
I bought this book for a friend with cancer and after reading the preface and first chapter just couldn't put it down! Verne Varona writes with an amazing clarity, insight and entertaining style while demystifing all kinds of nutritional myths. His information about acid and alkaline is the best I've read anywhere and his sugar craving information has allowed me to challenge what was a formidable addiction. It seems like he's taken the best of numerous cultural medicines and combined them into a practical and refreshing melting pot approach. Best of all, after five weeks on this program I feel better than I have in 30 years! I have as much kitchen savvy as kangeroo, but his recipes are easy-to-follow and absolutely delicious. Whether you have cancer, concerned about cancer or just in search of good health, this highly motivating book is a must read for anyone wanting to improve or recover their health. That's my take!

Well Researched and thought out
By Linda King
Loaded with the latest Research and many years of practical experience, made this book such a beleivable read, a book I can reference and read over and over again, I specifically used a pink highlighter to zoom in on all the important points, which runs rampant without the whole book. If you are a person who wants valid, clear information on how to take care of yourself for the rest of your life whether you have cancer or not, this is the book for you, I healed my cancer fifteen years ago using these principles and there never outdated, like so many diet trends out there!! this is a keeper. Thank you for your hard work, in putting the book together. L.K.

EXCELLENT
By Dano Maxwell
This book is an excellent way to kick start your immune system in the fight against cancer.
You need to follow the special diets religiously. Your LIFE depends on it.
Forget about just beating cancer with Radiation therapy and Chemo. You need to attack cancer from all fronts. Learn as much as you can about YOUR specific type of cancer. Follow a diet like the ones laid out in this book (It's more of an eating lifestyle change), go to a Nutrition therapist if necessary.
There are also medical doctors who have studied alternative therapy and can provide anti-cancer injections.

My sister has stage 4 cancer which spread from her Esophagus to her back and thigh bones. We were devestated and used this book and a doctor who had studied alternative cancer therapy in Switzerland. Her cancer has stopped spreading at last.

VERY GOOD BOOK. VERY HELPFUL. EXCELLENT RESOURCE TO USE ALONG WITH YOUR CONVENTIONAL CANCER TREATMENT.

Fat Chance: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease, by Robert H. Lustig

New York Times Bestseller

Robert Lustig’s 90-minute YouTube video “Sugar: The Bitter Truth”, has been viewed more than six million times. Now, in this much anticipated book, he documents the science and the politics that have led to the pandemic of chronic disease over the last 30 years.

In the late 1970s when the government mandated we get the fat out of our food, the food industry responded by pouring more sugar in. The result has been a perfect storm, disastrously altering our biochemistry and driving our eating habits out of our control.

To help us lose weight and recover our health, Lustig presents personal strategies to readjust the key hormones that regulate hunger, reward, and stress; and societal strategies to improve the health of the next generation. Compelling, controversial, and completely based in science, Fat Chance debunks the widely held notion to prove “a calorie is NOT a calorie.” More timely than ever now that newest edition of The Dietary Guidelines for Americans has for the first time placed hard limits on the amount of sugar we should consume, Fat Chance takes science to its logical conclusion to improve health worldwide.

Review
“No scientist has done more in the last fifty years to alert Americans to the potential dangers of sugar in the diet than Dr. Robert Lustig.”
--Gary Taubes, author of Good Calories, Bad Calories and Why We Get Fat

“Our eating habits are killing us. In this timely and important book, Dr. Robert Lustig presents the scientific evidence for the toxicity of sugar and the disastrous effects of modern industrial food on the hormones that control hunger, satiety, and weight. He gives recommendations for a personal solution to the problem we face and also suggests a public policy solution. Fat Chance is the best book I've read on the relationship between diet and health and the clearest explanation of epidemic obesity in our society.”
--Andrew Weil, M.D., author of Spontaneous Happiness and You Can’t Afford to Get Sick

“Fat Chance is THE manifesto for our time. It reveals the real reasons we why we are a fat nation and how to cure the obesity epidemic.  It gets right to the root of the problem, which is not gluttony and sloth, as the food industry, government and your neighbor would have you believe.  It is because we are drowning in a sea of sugar which poisons our metabolism, shrinks our brains, and threatens our national security and global competitiveness.  Every American, politician, teacher, and business leader must read this book.  Our nation's future depends on it.”
--Mark Hyman, M.D., author of The Blood Sugar Solution

“Fat Chance is an extraordinary achievement. Obesity's causes, mechanisms, health consequences, and preventive approaches are all devilishly complicated, but Dr. Lustig's outstanding contribution clarifies the complexity via a writing style that's accessible, insightful, and often gently humorous. Robert Lustig is a clinician, a scientist, and an advocate — a combination that that makes him uniquely qualified to bring the condition's many facets into sharp focus. Obesity has become the world's number one health problem. Fat Chance is the book for all of us who must confront this epidemic.”
--S. Boyd Eaton, M.D., Departments of Radiology and Anthropology, Emory University, and father of the Paleo Diet movement

“Robert Lustig is neither ringing an alarm bell nor giving us a gentle, paternalistic nudge. His message is more authentic. He is a medical doctor issuing a prescription. In order to address a current cocktail of health threats, Americans must alter their diets and do so radically. Those alterations must begin with a dramatic reduction in the consumption of sugars.”
--Alec Baldwin

“The obesity pandemic is well documented. But what can be done about it? More importantly, when does a personal health issue rise to become a public health crisis? In Fat Chance, Dr. Robert Lustig examines the science of obesity to determine the role that our current diet (especially too much sugar and too little fiber) plays in weight gain and disease. Using that knowledge, he proposes changes in our personal, public, and governmental attitudes to combat this scourge. Fat Chance is a 'savory' read with a 'sweet' finish.”
--Sanjay Gupta, M.D., neurosurgeon and CNN medical correspondent

The Mediterranean Diet

Pioppi, a small town in Italy, is the home of the Mediterranean diet. In Ancel Keys' Seven Countries study (Italy was one of the countries), this diet was associated with lower death rates from heart disease. The diet was popularized in America due to its population's low incidence of disease and long lifespan. Unfortunately, Pioppi and many surrounding areas that originally consumed a peasant fare can no longer afford to do so. Processed food is more readily available and cheaper. These areas, once renowned for their health, have soaring rates of obesity in part due to a current lack of whole grains, fresh fruits, and vegetables from their diets. These items are just too expensive, and they don't taste as good.

Here's what's in the real Mediterranean diet: high olive oil consumption (mono-unsaturated fat); legumes (beans, lentils, peas); fruits, vegetables, and unrefined grains (fiber); dairy products (saturated fat); eggs (high-quality protein); fish (omega-3s); and wine in moderation (resveratrol, flavonoids, and likely other factors). Americans misunderstand the Mediterranean diet, because they think it is all about pasta, which is Italian but not Mediterranean. Because what the Italians used to eat in Italy is not what the Italians eat in the United States. The pasta and pizza movement actually started in the United States within the poor Italian immigrant population, based on the cost of carbohydrates versus meat. That diet then migrated over to Italy. And now the Italians have our problem.

Life changing nutritional education
By Amazon customer
I had hit a wall in terms of eating right and dieting. Then my sister shared with me how much she was able to lower her LDL in her cholesterol by reducing her sugar intake. I started to Google articles on sugar and came across Dr Lustig's You Tube video. It was 90 minutes but it was, in a word, captivating. I was then fortunate to find out that he was coming out with a book at the end of December. I had it delivered to my Kindle while on a beach vacation during the Christmas/ New Year's holidays.
Well, as much as that does not sound like a good vacation book (I did read 2 other novels), it was fantastic on multiple levels. Dr Lustig has a gift because not only is he obviously educated in his field but he is articulate and extremely thorough.
Specifically, his book details how sugar is bad for you but he takes it to a level where you totally get it. He explains it from angles that you have never even realized existed...politically, economically, socially and of course, scientifically. And it is not just sugar. He gets into every corner of nutrition....fiber, insulin, leptin, stress, exercise. The book covers everything. It is obvious he put a tremendous amount of effort into this book. He also states very clearly that he has scientific back-up to all of his statements.
As I mentioned above, I was looking for a "new diet book" but this book is much more than that. Realizing what is going on in my body because I absolutely love and eat so many carbs was mind boggling. He teaches you all about food labels and let me tell you, it is an education. I am married over 25 years and my wife always does the food shopping. This book had such an effect on me, that I went food shopping by myself so that I could take the time and read the food labels. You cannot believe how much sugar is in your food. I am not even viewing my change in eating as a diet. This is about understanding what is going on with all of the garbage that we consume. For me, it is a change of life. The book just clicked with me.
If you want to live longer( in addition to many other benefits such as losing weight), read this book cover to cover. I also love the fact that he endorses the glass of red wine I am drinking right now.

A book that might change how you eat!
By Christina Dudley
I devoured this book.

Lustig, a pediatric endocrinologist at UCSF whose "Sugar: The Bitter Truth" lecture video got lots of hits on YouTube, has been watching the rise of obesity and its attendant ills in his practice over the last umpteen years. While not every obese person is unhealthy (and many people with acceptable BMIs still suffer from metabolic syndrome), obesity frequently brings in train "the cluster of chronic metabolic diseases...which includes...type 2 diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), lipid (blood fat) disorders, and cardiovascular disease," along with "co-morbidities associated with obesity, such as orthopedic problems, sleep apnea, gallstones, and depression." Lustig even mentioned the increase of dementia as tied to this whole mess, as insulin resistance leads to dementia!

Consider some of his alarming statistics:

- 1/4 of U.S. children are now obese;

- Greater than 40% of death certificates now list diabetes as the cause of death, up from 13% 20 years ago;

- The percentage of obese humans GLOBALLY has doubled in the last 28 years; there are now 30% more overnourished (obese) people than undernourished, worldwide;

- Fructose (all the sugars you can think of, apart from the sugar in milk) is "inevitably metabolized to fat";

- Fructose consumption has doubled in the past 30 years and increased six-fold in the last century;

- The majority of humans, regardless of weight, release double the insulin today as we did 30 years ago for the same amount of glucose; this hyperinsulinemia leads to insulin resistance, the body thinking it's starving, and increased eating, especially for foods high in fat and sugar because our dopamine receptors aren't getting cleared--a vicious cycle;

- The processed food industry has turned to increased sugars of all kinds to improve flavor and shelf life; we eat lots of processed foods; therefore, 20-25% of all calories we consume on average come from sugars; in adolescents this number can approach 40% of daily calories.

Because I was blitzing through this, I didn't absorb the science as well as I might have, but Lustig helped me understand that how often, how much, and how unhealthily we eat can be a function not of choice but of our biochemistry. The feedback systems and processing systems which served humans so well for eons were not built to handle as much food as we eat nowadays, particularly the avalanche of empty sugar calories. Sweets and fats used to be hard for us to come by--if we hit a surplus, of course our bodies stored it up (as fat) for a rainy day! Unfortunately, there are no more rainy days, so we keep storing and storing and overloading the system.

Lustig's book is not about dieting or losing weight--in fact he says we have natural weights we gravitate toward, and there isn't a heckuva lot we can do about it, exercise or no exercise. But obesity is a new thing that is environmentally-aided, and that can be fought against.

His conclusion? You can probably guess. Lots of fruits and vegetables and fiber. The fiber in fruits requires enough work to digest that it effectively negates the fructose. Milk or water to drink (lactose is not processed like fructose). Meats (not corn-fed) and dairy (ditto) are fine, but don't skip the produce. Whole grains (all the brown in them--exactly how my son doesn't like them), but even then there's no need for tons of grain. And, if it has a nutrition label, it's a processed food. Use sparingly.

The low-hanging fruit Lustig tackles first is ridding your life of soda, smoothies, frappucinos, and fruit juice. (8 ozs of orange juice has more sugar than 8 ozs of Coke.) If you do alcohol, do just enough wine to get the resveratrol benefits and then lay off.

As Lustig points out, changing one's food environment is all but impossible for the poor. After all, corn and soy receive massive government subsidies, making the processed foods based on them cheap, cheap, cheap. Even if you had access to fresh produce, your money goes farther on the stuff in boxes, and food stamps cover soda. One of the more disheartening bits of the book was when he talked about meeting with Michelle Obama's personal chef Sam Kass, the point person for the White House Obesity Task Force. Kass admitted everyone in the White House (incl the Pres) had read Lustig's NYTimes article "Is sugar toxic?" but they would do nothing to help. "Because they don't want the fight, this Administration has enough enemies." Sigh. Not that the Republicans mentioned fared any better. Basically, changing our food landscape is up to us. For those of us with the dollars, vote with our dollars! If we don't buy it, not all the food stamps in the world will make it profitable.

Kind of a bummer to read this going into Christmas-cookie season, but one of my New Year's Resolutions will be to improve the food environment for my kids. (How I wish I had a time machine! I would never have introduced our biggest consumption area for processed foods--breakfast cereal. I can only comfort myself that we don't eat any off of his "Ten Worst Children's Breakfast Cereals" list!)

Highly recommend.

Well credentialed physician provides valuable insight into major problem
By Susanna Hutcheson
As a health and fitness researcher and reviewer, I have a keen interest in why people get sick and how we can stay healthy. There is so much clutter out there. So much half-baked information, little of which is based on science.

The author tells us upfront, "I'll make a promise to you right now: there is not one statement made in this entire book that can't be backed up by hard science."

And so, it was with great pleasure that I read this book by a doctor who understands the problem of sugar in the diet on all levels. My only real disappointment was that he is a pediatrician and an awful lot of what he writes is about children and their problems. While this is of great importance, I prefer to read about mature people and their problems. Having said that, sugar is a problem for us all.

The parts in the book about the government and its relationship with the food industry is all well-known and you can just pass over this part if you already know it. And, a lot of it is available in his YouTube video. But, if you're unfamiliar with the topic, you may find it fascinating.

But you will find how to read a food label. I find this really an eye-opener. I sort of knew what to look for but not totally. This book filled the gap for me.

The author believes that all sweeteners are bad. But, he lays it out in a way that is most persuasive. He says, "All caloric sweeteners contain fructose: white sugar, cane sugar, beet sugar, fruit sugar, table sugar, brown sugar, and its cheaper cousin HFCS. Add to this maple syrup, honey, and agave nectar. It's all the same. The vehicle is irrelevant; it's the payload that matters."

The book starts out with a lot of high-toned medical jargon that really should have been eliminated for the layperson. It's quite boring unless you're a medical professional. But, I guess if you read it several times it might make sense on some level.

The author provides a fairly extensive shopping list of foods you can have in any amount, those you can have about five times a week or so and those either not at all or once a week. I found the list helpful. But, I was surprised after he had claimed agave, honey, etc to be safe alternatives to table sugar, that he put them in the "red" or once a week part of the list.

I was a bit concerned when the doctor writes that he gained 45 pounds during his residency and has not taken them off yet. I appreciate his candor. But question why he has failed to take his own extra weight off. He may feel his weight is ok and it may be. I just found it curious.

He did say that, "Indeed, overweight people with BMIs between 25 and 30 live longer than thin people with BMIs of less than 19." So, he may be somewhere between those two figures. Whatever the case, I found the book a delightful and important read and highly recommend it to you.

I am forced into speech because men of science have refused to follow my advice without knowing why. H.P. Lovecraft's terrifying horror story gets an illustrated interpretation by one of today's finest graphic novel artists. Geologist William Dyer--the narrator of this novella--is desperate to stop a research team planning a journey to Antarctica. He himself led a disastrous mission there, only to discover evidence of blood-chilling evil from beyond Earth. Will the new expedition continue its plans? And what will happen if they go? Once again, as he did in The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Hound of the Baskervilles, Ian N. J. Culbard has created an unforgettably powerful retelling of a classic tale.

Great Treatment of Great Stories!
By Evan Hammerman
I have read this story many times. I wanted to see what a graphic novel treatment would look like.

It looks great. It perfectly captures the feel of turn-of-last-century Exploration, when Europeans and Americans went traipsing all over the globe.

It weaves all of Lovecraft's elements of the Old Ones, the dread Necronomicon, and the rest of his mythos together.

IF this is your first time with these story, you're lucky!

Pretty good adptation, OK art
By Matthew T. Carpenter
Selfmadehero is an independent small press from the UK devoted to producing high quality graphic novels, including in printed form. They have been at it since 2007 but they just crossed my radar with the adaptation of At the Mountians of Madness by INJ Culbard. For those of us who are mythos fans there is more good stuff ahead, as they plan to publish some adaptations of HPL's other works including The Dunwich Horror in 2011. Mr. Culbard's website gives some samples of his work. I ordered my copy from the UK direct from the publisher; delivery over the Christmas rush was about 8 weeks. The production is certainly high quality, with an atmospheric cover and excellent colors.

Regarding this adptation, well, I really wish I liked it better. I found it to be just OK. My up front bias is that after years of familiarity with HP, ATMOM is my favorite story. The problem is parts of it are hard to adapt visually. I mean, how did the protagonist actually figure out with the Elder Things' pictographs actually meant? It sort of strains credulity in the novella and here, well how do you depict that in a comic? It makes me wonder what Guillermo Del Toro is going to do. And what is he going to do with tekeli-li. Mostly my impression was that the rest of the adaptation was decent. I am not familiar with any other graphic novel versions of the story and Mr. Culbard's effort is estimable enough; most artists would rather take on a shorter, less problematic or juicier tale so kudos for assailing the heights on his first Lovecraftian book. So what were the best parts? The drawings of mountains and machinery, ships and airplanes were all very well done. The atmospheric effect of the way the mountains were presented was a strong point. The Elder Thing and the autopsy were excellent. The crowning glory, however, was when the plane carrying Dyer and Danfort crested the mountain range to reveal the ancient remains of the city. On the other hand, I wasn't too taken with the drawing of people and I didn't find the shoggoth particularly horrific.

There is really no competition for the book; if you want a graphic novel adptation of ATMOM, this is the only one. It is not very expensive and offers a pleasant chance to while away a winter evening (it was snowing outside while I read my copy). You don't absolutely need to read HPL's novella first, although it helps (and you can get it online for free). I think most fans will enjoy it. I certainly did, although I wished for better art. It ranks about with the books Worlds of HP Lovecraft from Transfuzion. I like the art of Richard Corben in Haunt of Horror: Lovecraft a bit better. I look forward to Selfmadehero's next Lovecraft book.

Great Quality Full Color Graphic Novel Adaptation
By Talvi
This is a very well done graphic novel adaptation of the famous Lovecraft novel. The book has forwards and more information about Lovecraft and the novel which was useful to read: I've not read Lovecraft books and instead picked this up because of the graphic novel format.

The quality of the book is obvious: beautiful full color illustrations on thick quality matte (not glossy) paper. The illustrations themselves are in the style of the period in which the book was written: 1930s cartoony (more like the loose Dick Tracy/Popeye art rather than more intricate serialized comics art of Flash Gordon). Those looking for horror/horrific artwork should look elsewhere: this is a literary adaptation and not a horror art. I personally really appreciated and respected that the art work echoed the spirit/era of the book rather than being a modern reinterpretation completely with overlybuilt muscular young men with long hair.

Since I had never read Lovecraft, I did not come into the story knowing it in advance. And admittedly, I was completely puzzled by the end of the book over what had happened. I think there were too many concepts that simply could not be drawn and were solely meant for the imagination of the book reader. I don't fault that at the artist: in fact, I think he did a decent enough job of covering the story. But as such, I appreciated the book once more once I read up on the story elsewhere.

In all, I was very pleased with the book. It is well drawn and does a decent job of conveying a very difficult storyline. I also really like that the book respects the spirit and feel of when the book was written: the 1930s.

Review

“An excellent resource for beginning and veteran secondary teachers, offering strategies that work to meet the challenges they encounter daily. I am recommending this book to my staff for reflection on how they address difficult situations and implement positive change.”

(Joseph J. Mazzetti, Assistant Principal 2008-11-17)

“A much-needed how-to guide for beginning teachers. This book gives beginning teachers a heads up on the real-life management issues that envelope the art and science of effective instruction.” (Elisabeth Hess Rice, Assistant Professor 2009-03-09)

“How I wish I had this book when I began my teaching career 45 years ago! I found in each story another ‘aha’ of recognition. While the author claims the book to be simply a practical, concise classroom management guide for novice teachers, she delivers so much more, providing the grist to enhance her readers’ confidence as well as their competence and preparing them for interpersonal challenges well beyond the classroom. Helping novice teachers triumph over their insecurities and fears, Zuckerman provides the windows for them to understand themselves so they can better nurture their students. In effect, her book inducts all teachers, whether novice or experienced, into the art of teaching, pointing the way for them to bestow upon their students the priceless gift of a love of learning.” (Bonnie M. Kaye, School Psychologist 2009-03-11)

“As a novice teacher craving more and more knowledge about the elaborate and multifaceted world of teaching, I couldn’t wait to delve into the stories and techniques Zuckerman highlighted from other novice teachers. I found comfort in the fact that many of my teaching experiences were the same as other novice teachers. Zuckerman’s ability to provide exceptional techniques from lesson planning to discipline issues and overall effective classroom management strategies is by far the most useful information any novice teacher could ask for.” (Lecia Zulak, Science Teacher 2009-03-11)

“Provides practical, helpful information for novice teachers. Emphasizes the importance of activity-based lesson plans that influence effective classroom discipline.” (Nicholas J. Steenstra, Retired Principal 2009-03-11)

"Prepares the novice teacher for success in classroom management with a guide that exposes the real nature of disruptive events, along with clearly stated solutions." (William D. Schraer, Retired Supervisor for Science Instruction 2009-03-11)

About the Author

June Trop Zuckerman has had over 40 years of experience as an award-winning teacher and educator, approximately half of those years as a middle and high school science teacher and half as a professor of secondary education. Over the years, she has conducted countless classes and seminars for and about novice teachers and coached scores of them in their own classroom to improve their management skills.

With an EdD in science education from Teachers College, Zuckerman has focused her recent research on the mentoring of novice teachers, their classroom management strategies, and the practical knowledge they construct and communicate through storytelling. Her papers on these topics have appeared regularly in the Journal of Science Teacher Education, Science Educator, and American Secondary Education.

Now associate professor emerita at the State University of New York at New Paltz, she uses her extensive theoretical and practical knowledge of pedagogy to speak to and coach teachers at colleges and secondary schools in the region.

A First Aid Handbook for Classroom Problems
By Harry S. Pearle
This book should be a "must read" for teachers. I think the problem is often that teachers are in denial. They deny that they have problems which need any response. They just keep going on from day to day, lesson to lesson, without addressing situations that come up. Before you know it things really get out of hand!

Here is an Rx for classroom management problems. It is something of a handbook, with stories illustrating difficult situations that come up in class. It is beautifully organized, with five indices. Real classroom stories are highlighted for easy reference. It is nicely divided into two sections, lesson plan problems and class discipline problems. It contains a wealth of experience and research by Prof. Zuckerman.

This book is aimed at the middle and high school levels, grades 6-12. (I have taught only at the college level.) It is a handy "first aid" reference, which teachers can consult at any time, during the school day. It can help them to solve classroom problems. It can help them gain confidence and enthusiasm for teaching. Go for it, teachers!

Computational Methods for Physicists: Compendium for Students (Graduate Texts in Physics), by Simon Sirca, Martin Horvat

This book helps advanced undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral students in their daily work by offering them a compendium of numerical methods. The choice of methods pays  significant attention to error estimates, stability and convergence issues as well as to the ways to optimize program execution speeds. Many examples are given throughout the chapters, and each chapter is followed by at least a handful of more comprehensive problems which may be dealt with, for example, on a weekly basis in a one- or two-semester course. In these end-of-chapter problems the physics background is pronounced, and the main text preceding them is intended as an introduction or as a later reference. Less stress is given to the explanation of individual algorithms. It is tried to induce in the reader an own independent thinking and a certain amount of scepticism and scrutiny instead of blindly following readily available commercial tools.

Review

From the reviews:

“This is a well designed textbook that offers a generous compendium of numerical analysis, at a medium level of training in mathematics. The exposition style is attractive, and theoretical aspects are illustrated by relevant examples. … The book is recommended to students and researchers whose interests go beyond ‘successful recipes’, towards consistent insights into the mathematical support. Educators may also find interesting applications and case studies for lectures or laboratory sessions.” (Octavian Pastravanu, zbMATH, Vol. 1284, 2014)

This is a very useful and well written book

This is a very useful and well written book. Like the Numerical Recipes, I use it as a dictionary, reading only the sections relevant to my immediate need. In particular, it contains the clearest discussion of Pade approximant I have read.
