This one predominantly deals with the most important benign and malignant breast lesions, but it is also eclectic and thus covers more or less the entire spectrum of changes to be found microscopically in breast biopsies. The book is well illustrated and includes access to a web site that contains additional histopathology pictures. "It is designed as a compact guide to surgical pathology of breast biopsies to serve as a quick reference for practicing surgical pathologists, but it also could serve as a textbook for pathologists in training. The authors meet their objectives with this very useful book. Intended for surgical pathologists, its readers will include both practicing pathologists and novices at various educational levels of training. The authors are among the leading experts in the field of breast pathology with a number of important publications to their credit. They are also well known educators and serve as consultants to many other pathologists. The book reflects their long-term commitment to the study of breast pathology and is based on years of practice as well as discussions about various breast lesions. "Like the other titles in this series, this book comes in a relatively small format, which will make if handy as a desk reference. The 20 chapters begin with normal anatomy and histology of the breast and end with specimen processing, evaluation, and reporting. It covers all breast pathology, including reactive inflammatory lesions, benign tumors, and malignant tumors. Common lesions are given more space than the rare entities, but the less common ones are discussed. I could not find any significant omissions. All chapters are well illustrated with high quality color photographs and well referenced with relevant and recent citations referring to articles in the leading pathology journals. The text is supplemented with tables summarizing key diagnostic features and differential diagnosis. In addition to the 550 color microphotographs, there are 300 photographs in the web site supplement which is available to readers through an access code. "There are currently several very good surgical pathology books dealing with breast pathology, but none of them summarizes the salient problems of breast pathology better and more comprehensively than this compact yet truly wonderful book. My colleagues, who know much more breast pathology than I, swear by it and use it to support their diagnoses and even to occasionally lecture me by quoting from its pages. Over the last few months, I have also begun to use it and I have become convinced that it contains just the right amount of facts for an ideal quick, yet trustworthy reference. A must for pathologists

This is an excellent book that is well organized, well written and beautifully illustrated. I have found this to be an extremely useful reference during the course of surgical pathology signout. Discussion of diagnostic problems in which I have been interested have been easy to find and clearly addressed. I think this is a "must have" book for practicing pathologists, pathology residents and pathology fellows. It is also likely to be a useful reference for clinicians involved in the care of patients with breast diseases.

Online resource hobbled ...

This hard cover text book is an excellent resource for the practicing pathologist. The online text was great until January, 2011, when Lippincott took down what was an excellent, fast and efficient, online resource and replaced it with a miserably restricted version, which seems like a limited version of Amazon's "Click to Look Inside" function. The online reference text now displays just page by page. It can no longer be scrolled or printed. It can be searched, but its rudimentary search function merely returns a list (10 entries at a time) of every page on which the word appears, along with a 5-6 word sentence fragment for context (no chapter or section title). From that minimal information, I cannot figure out which is the pertinent entry for my query. It's faster for me to get up, get the printed text book off the library shelf, and look it up there.

This is an excellent book. It does not have a lot of blah blah ( you know what I mean!!) but it has all the necessary information to function as a resident and an attending. I really enjoyed it, as from a linguistic point of view is so well written. And tons of pictures. Recommended

About the Author
Joyce Gladwell was born in Jamaica, and graduated with a B.A. in Psychology and Anthropology from University College London in 1956. Brown Face, Big Master was first published in 1969, by Inter Varsity Press, London. Since 1969 Joyce has lived in Canada with her husband Graham, a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo. They have three sons and two grandchildren. Joyce is a Marriage and Family Therapist.

Worth reading

I must admit that I was first drawn to read this book because Ms. Gladwell is the mother of one of my favorite authors - Malcolm Gladwell. However, after reading the first couple of pages, I was drawn to her story. You share her journey as she grows from a sheltered school girl in Jamaica to a determined University student in England and later a wife and mother. Ms. Gladwell is candid about her relationship with God and how that relationship matures as she matures. Ms. Gladwell gives you a glimpse inside her life and leaves you inspired.

This book was short and rich with ideas and observations. Following Joyce Gladwell, Malcolm Gladwell's mother, through her spiritual journey as well as her discoveries as a woman of color, a sister, a daughter, and a mother. Cataloguing her depression and speaking about her experiences so exactly while also maintaining an emotional piece this book really surprised me.

While there may not seem like anything life-changing about this book now the introduction gives a lot of good context for the world this book was written in. Gladwell also tells her own stories that give us a clear idea of her experiences and the life she was navigating. I was especially drawn in by how openly she talks about shame and fear.

This book is a wonderful read - both the subjects discussed and the way in which Gladwell writes is captivating.

The autobiograpy was interesting but the language used seemed a bit stilted. Perhaps this is because the writer was raised in the West Indies during the 1940's. Nonetheless, the book provides insight into the life a West Indian immigrant in the UK.

Mama and her Bank Account

I won't give away the spoiler that ties together the whole plot, but needless to say it's right up there in the title of the book and it's still a surprise even after sixty years or more since the novel was first published. Kathryn Forbes must have been a delightful woman and her book is one of the finest achievements ever to have been written in San Francisco. And that's saying something, considering what a rich and cultured city ours is. One episode that will stick with me forever is the time when the little girl and her brother are talked into providing food for their whole class at school, and "Mama" saves the day by cooking up some of her good old Swedish (I guess Norwegian) meatballs. When I first read this passage I was but a little boy and had never heard of any kind of meatballs but Italian ones! Next thing you know, my mom and dad took us to dinner and the waiter asked me what I wanted to eat and I surprised them all by asking for "Swedish meatballs on little tooth picks."

It's a family book for people whose families are no longer with us. And it will rekindle the spirit of hope in everyone, with its message of universal tolerance and mother love.

A Neglected Literary Gem

I first read this novel in 1946 as a freshman in high school. The author's son was a sophomore in the same school. Dick was enormously popular, class president, a natural athlete, gifted amateur actor, public speaker and writer. Certainly a remarkable lad in his own right. (In 1947, having dropped a water bomb on one of the faculty, I knew my days were numbered and changed schools. Never ran into Dick again. So this is not a review written by a friend). That said, it was only de rigueur to read a book written by a classmate's mother.
The story line has been described by other reviewers, and their comments are right on target. One thing I might add is that Kathryn Forbes enjoyed a widespread national celebrity in the late forties, particularly after the Hollywood film was released. The story was also adapted for theater and, later, television. Sadly, celebrity is a perishable commodity.
I picked up this book and read it again last year. As a published novelist, I read it on this occasion with a very critical eye. It is as fresh as it was more than half a century ago. Not a great novel in the Faulknerian sense, but certainly a small classic. It is a charming work of great originality. Anyone interested in becoming a writer would do well to study it. See how beautifully Kathryn Forbes blends the theme and story line. Check out the clever characterization, and the simplicity of her writing style (never pretentious). This book is truly a little gem of its genre.

Read it aloud to the family or your class!

This is one of my favorite books to read aloud. I taught junior highers for many years and this was a book they loved! Many times I taught sisters and brothers in later years and they would invariably ask when I was going to read Mama's Bank Account. The story appeals to both boys and girls and though Mama is the central character, I appreciated the fact that Papa was a very strong, loving support to the family. After you have read the book, watch the video! It is one of the few books that made the transition to the screen and is delightful!

The first printing of this amazing book was August 1931. The principles shared in it are as applicable today , as they were when Vash Young put them on paper. One of the great truths shared in is work is " Prosperity cannot be built on fear ". The book is a gem !

Alistair MacLean, the son of a Scots minister, was brought up in the Scottish Highlands. In 1941 he joined the Royal Navy. After the war he read English at Glasgow University and became a schoolmaster. The two and a half years he spent aboard a wartime cruiser were to give him the background for HMS Ulysses, his remarkably successful first novel, published in 1955. A real hero at last

I hear there is a trend growing to rediscover real men! Well, I found one reading the wonderfully enjoyable Sea Witch! Helen Hollick's hero, the pirate captain Jesamiah Acorne is everything a hero should be, charismatic, courageous, downright sexy but with enough flaws to be fully human.

Sea Witch brings an authentic feel of the wide oceans and the Golden Age of Piracy, it is exciting with a moving believable love story but plenty of full blooded, heart-stopping action. I cannot recommend it highly enough and am holding my breath for the next in what I hope will be a long series of Sea Witch and Jesamiah Acorne chronicles. My sister has fallen totally in love with Jesamiah too. His allure is becoming a world wide sensation.

Good enough to get you hooked on MacLean, but not his best

"Seawitch" was the first Alistair MacLean book that I ever read, and it was good enough to get me hooked on him. To my delight, I discovered that most of his earlier books were even better.
The plot of "Seawitch" is a little less convoluted than typical MacLean: Lord Worth, fabulously wealthy and quite ruthless, has made a lot of enemies in the oil business because of his cutthroat attitude. His drill rig, named Seawitch, will put the final nail in the coffin of his competitors, as it will allow him to drill at will in the ocean. His competitors decide that while they hate one another, they all hate Lord Worth even more. So they hire a ruthless "troubleshooter" to fix their problem. They don't need to know how, don't even want to know how, they just want it done.
Fortunately for Lord Worth, his two daughters (one blonde, one brunette) are in love and loved by two former police detectives/now private investigators. These two guys are your usual MacLean heroes: tough, resourceful, insubordinate (which is why they are ex-police detectives), hopelessly upright. From there, it's a cat and mouse game between the two sides to see if Seawitch gets destroyed. There's a lot of sneaking around, some violence, and a satisfying climax.
Still, by 1977, when he wrote "Seawitch," MacLean was starting to lose his talent, and after this, his books range from mediocre ("Athabasca") to dreadful ("River of Death", "Partisans"). You would do yourself a favor to go back to read books MacLean wrote between 1959 and 1971, when he kicked out an amazing string of mostly Cold War thrillers, the best of which are "Ice Station Zebra," "The Golden Rendezvous," "The Black Shrike," "The Satan Bug," "Bear Island," "Puppet on a Chain," "Where Eagles Dare," and "Night Without End." Those books -- many of which were made into movies -- are tight, tension-filled, unpredictable reads.

About the Author
Jay Friedenberg is Chair and Professor of the Psychology Department at Manhattan College, where he directs the Cognitive Science program. He obtained his Ph.D. in cognitive psychology in 1995 at the University of Virginia. He is interested in both vision and the philosophy of mind. He teaches courses in physiological psychology, learning and cognition, sensation and perception, and cognitive science. Dr. Friedenberg has published several articles on visual estimation of center of mass. His current research projects are investigating image statistics, picture perception, and the aesthetics of geometrical shapes. He has published books on artificial intelligence, chaos theory and psychology. He is a member of the Eastern Psychological Association, the Vision Science Society, The Psychonomic Society and Phi Beta Kappa.

Gordon Silverman is Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Manhattan College. His professional career spans more than 50 years of corporate, teaching, consulting, and research experience, during which he has developed a range of scientific instruments, particularly for use in physiological psychology research environments. He is the holder of eight patents, some related to behavior modification. The author of more than 20 journal articles and books, he has also served on the faculties of The Rockefeller University and Fairleigh Dickinson University. Dr. Silverman’s current research interests include telemedicine, rehabilitation medicine, artificial intelligence, and biomedical instrumentation and modeling.
