`Rethinking Ethnicity consists of two parts. The first discusses theoretical issues and the second explores some theoretical concepts and issues such as `majority ethnicity' on the basis of specific empirical cases concerning Britain, especially Wales and Ireland, and Denmark. The author starts from a broadly defined, anthropological concept of ethnicity - a`collective identification that is socially constructed with reference to putative cultural similarity and difference'. Though working within the anthropological tradition, Jenkins blames anthropologists for having directed their research too exclusively at ethnic groups as self-denied groups, in this way neglecting the related issuesof categorization by others, power relations and racism.

This is a well-written, concise and original contribution to the study of ethnicity and it is an excellent book to be recommended to everybody who wants to rethink' ethnicity and its relation to race and nation' - Royal Institute of International Affairs

Silly but somewhat humorous

This book is completely useless but somewhat entertaining. The prose accompanying each equation is witty. This book would be a reasonable cheesy gift for the person who has everything. The first chapter has an overview of basic algebra, including the all-important order of operations, so it might even be a useful gift for someone whose math education ended in junior high.

On the negative side, the "Dating and Relationships" section is completely written for a male perspective and generally invokes some negative stereotypes of women. The book could definitely use more egalitarian language to give it a broader appeal.

The calculator included with the book (packaged in the front cover) does not have an exponent function, even though most of the equations use an exponent. Did the publisher's marketing department even glance at the text before picking the gimmicky cover?

Best buy two

This is the sort of book you cannot wait to share with friends. Alas, as I've learned several times over, it's also the sort of book friends are reluctant to return after you loan it to them. Besides being funny and clever and near impossible to put down, it's actually useful, in the same way that a Rubik's Cube is (used to be) useful: to transport you into the realm of problems that wink, "I have a solution! Find me!" I cannot recommend this book too highly.

It's light cheeky humor that shouldn't be taken seriously

This book has some entertaining cheeky humor that most will appreciate, but it's best for those who don't have math backgrounds and who can enjoy it for the components of the analyses (writing style included). Even the author (or maybe even the editor) can see is that none of these equations are meant to be taken any more seriously than a Cosmo quiz, and that's what really makes this book bearable. For example, in a question on whether to follow a self-help book's advice, "Geek Logik" gets 1/16th of the effect of any other self-help book if the equation is followed. There are other unintended effects that in most modeling would be seriously questioned, but that's not the intent of this book.

The equations mostly come out as "if good factors > bad factors, then do it", with logical "ands" (i.e., both things need to happen) represented by multiplication and logical "ors" (i.e., at least one thing needs to happen) represented by additions. There are the occassional quadratics, cubics, and square roots to give a veneer of mathematic complexity, but most of these can be reduced to simpler factors and reasons. It can be fun to think about what the author intended, and the extra work put in to make it more substantial than a "sum up the score points" can be appreciated (even if there's no basis for correctness).

The book is inexpensive, so buy it as a silly coffee table book that can be brushed through in an hour; don't buy it for someone only because they have a math, engineering, or physics background. If they don't like this style of humor, then it will be a dud. Anyone buying it for the cover's marketing (i.e., the "foolproof equations") will likewise be sorely disappointed.

my son says thank you

so my son takes a popcicle to school in his backpack and is surprised when it explodes all over his books. I got a call from the librarian telling me I need to replace two of his books. sticker price was like $400. thank you amazon! although my son will be paying his allowance back for the better part of the near future, at least we got a great deal on his replacement books.

Good basic book

This is a good 6th grade book. Make sure you order the student workbook to go with it. My only complaint is the layout is a bit confusing for some students (the book, not the workbook. The workbook is great).

About the Author
Gareth Jones is a Professor of Management in the Lowry Mays College and Graduate School of Business at Texas A&M University. He received both his BA and PhD from the University of Lancaster, UK

Georgina Palffy worked as a travel editor for Cadogan Guides, a political and media analyst for an intelligence organization, a foreign affairs journalist at the "Guardian" and D"aily Telegraph" newspapers, and an art reviewer for a London listings magazine. She has also lived and worked in Rome for several years. Since moving to New Zealand in 2002, she and her family have been living 100 yards from the beach in Napier, art deco capital of Hawke's Bay. Married to a New Zealander, she didn't really want to come to the southern hemisphere in the first place, but has been converted to the easygoing charms of life on a South Pacific island.

DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION!!!

Like all DK books, The Religions Book is an excellent resource. Beautiful, formatted well, easy to read. Fascinating subjects broken down into understandable overviews and reflections. You cannot go wrong when you buy a DK Publishing book. They are always written by reputable scholars, full of incredible illustrations or pictures, and a pure joy to read. You rarely even realize you are LEARNING! This book is no different. Buy it.

BUT . . . DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION. I have never seen a worse Kindle book. Whoever formatted this book for Kindle should be sent back to school (or prison?). You cannot read it on Kindle. You cannot read it on the PC. It pops up in a little box of tiny text that you cannot even zoom in comfortably to read! You cannot highlight. Just a terrible experience.

It really is not fair that an awesome book like this gets its reviews skewed because whoever was in charge of the Kindle version RUINED it.

I own a dozen or more DK books and treasure them all. The Kindle version is garbage, but the book itself is nearly perfect.

Kindle version is horrible

While the content of the book is great, the Kindle formatting is terrible.
It is completely inconsistent with every other Kindle book I have purchased.
Supposedly you can zoom to enlarge text and double tap to see all sidebars.
None of those features work.
Double tapping actually seems to randomly jump you back and forth between different sections of the book.
It seems that one other book in this series has formatting problems as pointed out on the kindle order page.
All of the DK Publishing books in this series need to be re-assessed as to readability.

I truly love this kind of book. I have the 'Philosophy' and 'Psychology' book both by the same author (DK Publishing). This book takes each major religion and really breaks it down to its essential beliefs. This book is also an easy read and almost a short story format. People who love to learn but do not have the time to read a whole book would really benefit from books like this by DK. This book in particular really answered a lot of questions I have had on other religions without being bias. It is so difficult these days to find a book on religions that is not bias and to me that's yet another reason to love DK publishing. Something else that this book covered which I really appreciated was it went into the different kinds of Christians.

This book is theology so there is interpenetration and points of view which the reader must decide on. This book is a great resource to have for any questions you may have on religion. If you are looking for a book that has all of the major religions in the world with clear information that is not bias then look no further.
