Bass Scales

Good reference guide for beginner or intermediate bass players. If nothing else it's a good excercise guide. I'm sure if you've been playing bass your whole life it might seem too basic, but it certainly gives a person some new scales to mess around with.

Good reference

I am a beginner bass player and I use this book to practice my scales for 10-15 minutes every time I practice. It comes in handy when I'm jamming out and I need a quick look at what key to play in.

Don't buy

I have the Scales book for guitar so I bought this for my Bass education. I was surprised to find that the tab notation excluded the "G" string notes or high string notes of the four strings:GDAE in the tablature diagrams. It is shown in the fingerboard diagrams of all scales and the musical notation above the tablature diagrams, but not on the tablature measures. Also one page, number: 59 and 60 was inserted into the book upside down. This required dissassembling the plastic spiral spine from half of the book to re-insert the page back into the correct orientation. I will have to notate all 168 pages of all of the 1680 scale measures to add the missing tab notes, if I want to have a finished tablature edition. Since this was printed and manufactured in CHINA, I'm not surprised about it. Don't buy this as for a gift. It is not quality. I also note that the guitarist book has the same number of pages and is thicker because they used a heavier stock of paper at the time of that printing.

About the Author

Philip Kotler is S.C. Johnson & Son Distinguished Professor of International Marketing at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. He received his master's degree at the University of Chicago and his PhD at M.l.T., both in economics. Dr. Kotler is the author of Marketing Management (Pearson), now in its fifteenth edition and the most widely used marketing textbook in graduate schools of business worldwide. He has authored dozens of other successful books and has written more than 100 articles in leading journals. He is the only three-time winner of the coveted Alpha Kappa Psi award for the best annual article in the Journal of Marketing.

 

Professor Kotler was named the first recipient of four major awards: the Distinguished Marketing Educator of the Year Award and the William L. Dr. Kotler has served as chairman of the College on Marketing of the institute of Management Sciences, a director of the American Marketing Association, and a trustee of the Marketing Science Institute. He has consulted with many major U.S. and international companies in the areas of marketing strategy and planning, marketing organization, and international marketing. He has traveled and lectured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and South America, advising companies and governments about global marketing practices and opportunities.

 

John T. Bowen is Professor and former dean of the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston and the Barron Hilton Distinguished Chair. Professor Bowen has presented marketing courses and seminars in Asia, Australia, Central America, Europe, and South America. Dr. Bowen is a consultant to both large and small hospitality corporations. Before becoming an academic, Professor Bowen held positions in restaurant management at both the unit and corporate level. Professor Bowen is on the editorial boards of the Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration Quarterly, Journal of Services Marketing, International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Marketing and Worldwide Hospitality and Tourism Themes. He is co-author of Restaurant Marketing for Owners and Managers. Professor Bowen has received numerous awards for his teaching and research, including the UNLV Foundation Teaching Award, the Sam and Mary Boyd Distinguished Professor Award for Teaching, Founder’s Award for Lifetime Support of Hospitality Graduate Education, and the Board of Regents Outstanding Faculty Member. The Graduate Education & Graduate Student Research Conference presented him with the Founder’s Award, to recognize his contribution to graduate education. The Hotel and Lodging Association of Greater Houston recognized him with their lifetime achievement award. He has been a three-time recipient of the annual award from the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (CHRIE) for superior published research in the hospitality industry, and he received the John Wiley Award for Lifetime Research Achievement from CHRIE. Professor Bowen was recently cited as one of the five most influential hospitality management faculty in an article published in the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Education. The Mayor of Houston proclaimed November 21, 2014 as John Bowen Day, in recognition of Dr. Bowen’s contribution to the hospitality industry and hospitality education.

 

Dr. Bowen’s formal education includes a B.S. in hotel administration from Cornell University, an M.B.A. and M.S. from Corpus Christi State University, and a Ph.D. in marketing from Texas A&M University.

 

James C. Makens is actively involved with the travel industry. He has conducted executive training for the Sheraton Corporation, Regent International Hotels, Taiwan Hotel Association, and Travelodge of Australia. He has also conducted marketing seminars for tourism ministries or travel associations in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and many nations of Latin America. Dr. Makens serves as a consultant and has written marketing plans for travel industry companies and tourism promotion boards. Other books he has authored or co-authored include The Travel Industry and the Hotel Sales and Marketing Planbook. His professional articles have appeared in the Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration Quarterly, Journal of Travel Research, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, and Journal of Applied Psychology. Dr. Makens earned an M.S., an M.B.A., and a Ph.D. from Michigan State University. He holds a B.S. from Colorado State University. He served as associate dean in the School of Travel Industry Management of the University of Hawaii. He was also an associate dean of INCAE, an affiliate of the Harvard Business School in Central America. Dr. Makens recently retired from the faculty at The Babcock Graduate School of Management at Wake Forest University.

 

Seyhmus Baloglu is professor and Harrah Distinguished Chair at the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration, University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV).  He earned a B.S. in hotel administration from Cukurova University, an M.B.A. from Hawaii Pacific University, and a Ph. D. in hospitality marketing from Virginia Tech.   Professor Baloglu has presented marketing courses and seminars in Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Caribbean.  Before joining academia, he held management positions and had diverse background and in the industry including restaurants, hotels, resort clubs and travel agencies. Professor Baloglu has published extensively in leading journals, including Journal of Business Research, Cornell Hospitality Quarterly, Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Research, International Journal of Hospitality Management, Annals of Tourism Research, Journal of Travel Research, Tourism Management, Journal of Travel & Tourism Marketing, and Tourism Analysis.  He received grants, contracts, and consulting projects from tourism destinations, gaming resorts, hotels, airports, nightclubs, and supply chain organizations.  He has been named as one of the significant contributors to the hospitality and tourism literature.  His work has been cited extensively across multiple disciplines and fields.  His research credentials have earned him both an international reputation and placement on the editorial boards of numerous leading journals. He has presented his work at many national and international conferences, seminars, and symposia, and served as keynote speaker and panel participant for numerous international conferences.  Other books he has coauthored are Managing and Marketing Tourist Destinations: Strategies to Gain a Competitive Edge and Handbook of Scales in Tourism and Hospitality Research.   Professor Baloglu is the recipient of numerous and prestigious teaching, research, and service awards. Zoom in on the red triangle in the upper left hand corner. It says "Circulation of this Edition outside of the Indian Sub-Continent is Unauthorized"
That fun fact is not mentioned anywhere on this listing. Its completely different than the American version of this same textbook and edition of my classmates. Its void of color and full of mistakes, and the chapters and page numbers are completely different. The table of contents is also completely incorrect and brings you to random places within the book. Complete waste of money, do not buy.

Not the same as the American version!!

This is not the same as the American version of this book, like they claimed in the description. This is the Indian version and it is lacking, to say the least. Inside the front cover it is referred to as the "authorized adaptation." I don't know if this was translated to some language and then translated back to English, but there are more than a few grammatical errors. I've had to 'interpret' more than a few sentences. It also has the worst index I have ever encountered. There are major concepts in the book that do not appear in the index! But, there's an inch and a half long section for sales. Not different types of sales related topics, just "sales." I'm sorry, but that's not helpful. And they switched chapters 3 and 4 for some reason, so I read the wrong chapter for one of my assignments. I kept wondering when the the concept that I was supposed to write about would be introduced, only to find out after I finished the chapter that I was reading the wrong one. I ended up ahead in the reading, but having to cram another chapter in that week sucked. There's a reason this book was cheap, because it's a cheap knock off of the real book. Don't do it!!

Best Marketing Book I've Read

I gave this a five-star rating because it's one of the best marketing books I've ever read - and I'm a marketing student in my senior year and have read many, many marketing text books. The authors take all the facets of marketing (product development, pricing, advertising, etc.) and integrate them as one concept: true marketing. Most books say that all the facets are one, then treat them as separate; I felt this book did a much better job of treating them as a whole. The text was generally engaging, although it's still a text book. However, if this wasn't just about the hospitality and tourism industries, I'd recommend it for most marketing classes.

My only complaint is that it's supposedly about the tourism and hospitality industries. However, it's really about the hotel industry, with frequent references to the restaurant industry. Airlines are mentioned occasionally, and cruises and travel agencies definitely take a back seat role. That disappointed me, because I was interested in travel agencies, but the book would still be useful to those in the lesser-mentioned industries.

Memories Old and New

This story had a lot of tense moments and memories for Celeste. What was she running from, what was she afraid of? Will the peacefulness of the mountains be the answer?
It also has a deep emotional feeling that draws you into it by the writers words. I have mixed feelings about how it made me feel, but the writing was good and I couldn't put it down.

How each unit physically developed is documented along with all the subsequent commanders of these components with their military career specifics. Aside from those in preceding chapters, a further 20 of the formation's 55 Knight's Cross holders are also detailed to include service data and all surviving award proposals, the latter incorporated into the text or as one of multiple extended photo captions. The remainder are included among both volumes as is data on other Waffen-SS units created with cadre from "Totenkopf."

Separate chapters follow on the divisional commanders and senior staff officers. Half the division's more than 100 German Cross in Gold recipients are individually detailed to include their careers outside of "Totenkopf" service, all surviving award proposals, and full explanations of these diverse assignments. Throughout the volume is new data on Waffen-SS schools, training units, and predecessors and successors as they pertain to the "Totenkopf" Division. Following a chapter on the Single-handed Tank Destruction award is another detailing rare surviving award documents and similar material contributed by collections in Europe, Russia, and the United States.

A name index allows the reader to find all text entries and images for the more than 550 individuals in the initial volume that also details significant predecessors and successors. A glossary for the diverse terminology used in included.

Primarily unpublished images enhance this volume with their extended data captions, the authors also tracking down period prints or negatives for some well-known images to allow them to be reproduced with previously unseen detail and clarity.

Yerger's Masterpiece

Having written several books on specific Russian front battles, my interest in the classic Waffen SS and German Army divisions on the Eastern Front is considerable. One of the best known of the SS divisions, which was involved in many of the most famous battles in Russia, was the 3.SS-Panzer Division "Totenkopf." Starting with the first campaign in Russia, its enviable combat record, especially during defensive operations, was reinforced by further offensive successes during the battles for Kharkov and Kursk, as well as other combat operations when it was often far under-strength due to combat attrition. Army commanders of the period who had "Totenkopf" subordinated to their command spoke highly of the division, with Field Marshal von Manstein describing it as the best of the Waffen SS divisions.
        However, books on “Totenkopf,” even after almost three-quarters of a century, have repeated many past errors, incorrect assumptions or show a lack of competent research.  Authors willing to expend the requisite time, effort, and expenditure in careful research to guarantee accuracy are rare, while superficial, redundant or quickly written commercial books typify the vast majority of current day releases.  
        Mark C. Yerger is a prolific biographical researcher on the Waffen-SS with an earned reputation for presenting great detail and carefully researched factual works that are without bias. He has been the first or only researcher to write on a number of specific topics, in great detail that deal with the Waffen SS, its commanders and personnel. The amount of information found in Yerger’s nine volumes on SS German Cross recipients published by R. James Bender Publishing has not been equaled or even attempted for any other part of Germany's military. He has produced a series of books with a more complete body of information than any other comparable works, such as the many volumes about Knight's Cross holders that are available. Yerger’s book are a source of personnel information, organizational structure and personal battlefield exploits of Waffen SS soldiers which I have incorporated into my own books.
        However, having read the first volume of his "Totenkopf" trilogy I honestly believe he has peaked as a Waffen-SS historian. Although he has written about various topics on nearly all the classic Waffen-SS combat units since the 1980s, I doubt that he can exceed the level of detailed information found in his “Totenkopf” trilogy.
        After a lengthy introduction, a "Commanders and Award Holders" chapter details the parameters of this comprehensive, detailed study of the personalities, organization and history of the division and provides a large amount of related information. A history of the four prewar units of the Totenkopfverbände, which were combined along with other Waffen-SS units, trained officers, and required support troops to create the division in 1939 is also provided.
        There is a section describing the early concentration camps, their creation, and the progression of the system up until the division was organized as a combat formation. However, the book is about the "Totenkopf" Division as a divisional combat unit that fought on the Eastern Front from 1941 to the end of the war.  It was never withdrawn for rebuilds like the other “classic” Waffen SS divisions, such as “Das Reich,” “Leibstandarte,” and “Wiking.” Therefore it remained on the front and was not involved as a unit in the administration of the camp system. Anyone interested in Holocaust topics will need to look elsewhere, although sources for additional reading are provided.
        There is a short chapter that shows uniquely rare surviving artifacts of these pre-war units combined with period pictures that are extremely rare.  There is an additional summary of the division's combat operations, including an analysis of its losses during various periods, and a review of the divisional Knight's Cross recipients during the periods discussed.
        Yerger has greatly expanded the amount of Combat Elements coverage from the information found in the German Cross series. Over 100 pages describing the 13 fighting components of the division. Also included is career information for all commanders, initial staff, and “Totenkopf” Knight's Cross holders.  The Knight’s Cross winners have their lengthy combat service history described with multiple, extremely detailed image captions that incorporate their surviving award proposals. Finding copies of these documents or tremendously rare originals for this many men of a division is a research triumph that only those who have studied thousands of pages of German records can even begin to appreciate.
        Nearly a hundred pages follow of biographies and other information and service records of the division commanders and "Totenkopf" First Staff Officers, this information being completely presented for the first time. Another 150 pages is devoted to the first half of "Totenkopf" men awarded the German Cross in Gold with all available surviving award texts to include those of Enlisted and NCO ranks which are the most unbelievably difficult documents to find. Volume I concludes with a list of Single-handed Tank Destruction Award recipients and an original documents section which describes the procedure involved in granting awards.
        While the text is the heart of the book, the incredible collection of images are clear, and large with long, informative captions, and most are unpublished. These pictures are of many personnel that I've written about for years but had never seen pictures of. Along with the normal bibliography, glossary, etc Yerger has included a name index that is essential for the 600+ men included.
        The first two volumes of this planned trilogy will cover the history, organization and personnel of the division who were awarded the Cross in Gold. Yerger’s his long-time friend, fellow researcher and colleague, Ignacio Arrondo, will present the history of the nearly 20 Totenkopfstandarten in volume III. Yerger’s high opinion of Arrondo’s abilities leave me no doubt that volume III with be as detailed and complete as the first two books. This work and the following volumes are extremely highly recommended.

This book, the first volume of three, is an outstanding book packed with important information and excellent photographic material as well as award documentation relevant to the personalities of this unique combat unit. If one has an interest in the Third Reich, Eastern Front and the SS in general you must obtain and read this book. It is an extremely well researched divisional history based on the structure, development and personalities of the Totenkopf Division. This volume and no doubt the future two volumes will fill an important void in the history of the Second World War. The author(s) and publisher (Helion) are to be congratulated and thanked in making this book available. My high expectations for the book have been exceeded now that I have completed reading it. The End Notes in itself almost justify a separate volume and reflects the absolute thorough research of this book.

Kary Mullis was awarded a Nobel Prize for inventing the PCR technique more than 15 years ago in 1993. Since its "discovery", multiple adaptations and variations of the standard PCR technique have been described, with many of these adaptations and variations currently being used in clinical, diagnostic and academic laboratories across the world. Further, these techniques are being applied at the diagnostic level (e.g. as high throughput testing methodologies to detect minimum residual disease, the presence/absence of specific pathogens etc), as well as to increase our understanding of fundamental disease processes.

Frequently, PCR technicians and specialists limit their understanding of PCR to one particular methodology. However, this approach limits their appreciation of the range of versatile PCR techniques currently available, techniques that may be applicable and indeed more suitable to their own laboratory situation.

This manual aims to provide the reader with a guide to the standard PCR technique and its many available modifications, with particular emphasis on the role of PCR techniques in the diagnostic laboratory (the central theme of this manual). Further, many important technical issues have been addressed, including types of PCR template material, PCR optimization, the analysis of PCR products, quality control and quality assurance, variants and adaptations of the standard PCR protocol, quantitative PCR and in situ PCR. The reader of this manual will be excellently informed about the fundamental principles of PCR and the true potential of PCR within clinical laboratory practice.
