Arturo Perez-Reverte (Spain, 1951) is considered to be one of the top 10 international novelists and is one of Spains best selling authors. His numerous works have been translated into 23 languages and four of his novels have been made into movies.

No es cosa del otro mundo, pero es interesante

La reina del sur es una novela de Arturo Pérez-Reverte que trata de una mujer que se convierte en la narcotraficante más poderosa del sur de España. Escrito en el 2002, el libro es la base para la telenovela del mismo nombre que se estrenó en el 2011. Es un libro de longitud moderado; tiene 544 páginas, y como soy estudiante de español, necesité tres meses y medio para leerlo. Usualmente no leo libros de accíon como este, pero, en el espíritu de tratar otras cosas en mi lengua nueva, pensé que algo diferent sería una buena idea.
Cuando la historia comienza en México, Teresa Mendoza solo es la novia joven de un piloto y narcotraficante de Sinoloa. Ella tiene una vida de lujo y sencillez, pero todo cambia completamente con una llamada telefónica: una llamada con las noticias de que su hombre está muerto y que sus asesinos van a matarla pronto también. Ella corre y aprende como sobrevivir; y por esto, su conocimiento y fuerza crecen, mientras su personalidad cambia a algo más ágil, dura y despiadada.
El estilo del autor es muy directo, y no es difícil leer la historia. Hay varias expresiones locales y vernacular, y a veces tenía que buscar fuera del diccionario de mi Kindle para entender unas palabras; por ejemplo, “pinche.” Pero es una parte importante de aprender un idioma nuevo.
Para mi, las partes mejores tenían que ver con los momentos más grandes en que la vida cambió en seguida, o cuando un secreto era revelado. A veces hay un momento, que se llama “La Situación”, cuando el peligro está muy cerca. Entonces ella tiene que pensar muy rápido mientras está siendo cazada por sicarios o criminales poderosos.
Por otra parte, ella también es una criminal y necesita preocuparse de la policía. Sin embargo, encontré estas partes que tienen que ver con los agentes del gobierno, aburrido y demasiado largo. Hay varias persecuciones de alta velocidad sobre el mar, por ejemplo, que simplemente no eran muy interesantes ni intrigantes. También, hay varios personajes menores que eran muy superficiales, no originales y sin intereses. Las personas todas parecían lo mismo para mi.
Un beneficio de leer esta novela es que se puede mirar por internet la telenovela también, con Kate del Castillo en el papel de Teresa. El español hablado muy rápido puede ser difícil de entender, pero cuando se sabe la historia y los personajes con adelanto, es muy divertido y una buena manera de aprender y practicar. Solo he visto un poquito del video, pero parece que está bien hecho y no tan diferente del libro.

Uneven quality

The story is fascinating, and the author has done a good job of painting a vivid and realistic picture. However, there are some defects.
The constant references to the book "The Count of Monte Cristo" are pointess and irritating. (There seems to be a tendency, especially among writers in Spanish, to use their novels to talk about books.) The long, long section about life and love in a women's prison is a needless distraction and not particularly well done. A male fantasy about this tangential topic, which could have been covered in half a dozen pages in terms of advancing plot and character. The description of a long gun battle is cartoonish. And there is a clumsy and self-conscious technique of using long run-on sentences to convey a sense of emotional confusion or a rush of events. (Good writing, like good taste, should never call attention to itself.)
The book is worth reading, but don't expect great literature. It's on the level of, say, Tom Clancy.

La narrativa podriase decir que es en forma cronologica donde el proposito principal es de relatar la historia de Teresa.. Los hechos son descritos en forma que el lector puede practicamente revivir las pericias de los personajes. Estos estan delineados directament y se puede concluir que son multidimensionales.
