A comprehensive overview and survey of this unique field

Palaeoecology provides both the student and the non-specialist general reader with an informative, accessible text and is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in broader environmental and earth science studies, as well as aspiring paleontologists and geologists.

An excellent (1998) Paleoecology book

An annoying thing about Amazon's listing of this book is that the volume is not a 2004 update to the 1998 version, but is, in fact, the 1998 version. Even so, this book is currently one of the few text books on the market that covers paleoecology as a discipline. There have been a number of recent volumes on topical aspects of paleoecology--such as lovely books like "the Walking Whales", "Pterosaurs", "Sabertooth", "Dogs" and the like, all of which do an excellent job with both the anatomy and the paleoecology of their specific group. Brenchley and Harper do a fine job of surveying the field. Given their biases, the emphasis lies more on Paleozoic examples than on more modern examples. The book is written by geologists so it is light on actual 'ecology' or, for that matter, 'biology' such as someone working in either field would see it. Geologists (and I am one) tend to see the world through a sedimentary lens which cuts out most processes that happen on short time scales (seasons to centuries) and plays up processes of fossilization and macro-scale environmental topics like sedimentary facies. I do not mean this as a criticism, but, the fact is that you will not find a lot of modern ecology in this volume that could inform our understanding of the geologic past. The strengths of the book are its sweeping appreciation of changes in ecosystem structure and function over the past 500 million years. This is a realm that is not typically appreciated by biologists, yet it informs us how the world works in the interaction of physical and chemical planetary evolution with life on the planet. That is a grand vision, indeed.
By the way, my rating is based upon the miss-leading date on the Amazon listing for the volume (it is 1998 NOT 2004), not any lack of appreciation for the contents of the book itself.
